Synapse Research Institute

Synapse Research Institute Development & Sales of purified clotting factors, assays and more. Research in the field of the (patho-)physiology of haemostasis and thrombosis.

Synapse BV was founded as a working group within the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM) as well as a company within the Maastricht University Holding. In 2009 Synapse BV became member of the STAGO Diagnostica group. It carries out developmental research in the field of the (patho-)physiology of haemostasis and thrombosis, operating in the niche between biochemistry and molecular

biology on the one side and pharmaceutical- and clinical sciences on the other. It more specifically explores the overall function of the thrombin generating system in platelet poor- and platelet rich plasma and blood as a diagnostic tool and a pharmaceutical target. It cooperates with major pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies on such subjects as the mechanism of action of antiplatelet drugs and clotting factor inhibitors, the measurement of their effects in vitro and in vivo in animals and humans, as well as the development of diagnostic procedures based on the assessment of the overall function of the coagulation mechanism.

Job description:
We are looking for an enthusiastic lab technician that would like to work in the field of hematology. Your job will be to perform experiments, measure patient samples and processing results.
The techniques that you will use will include, among others, thrombin generation, clotting assays, ELISA, FACS, and enzyme kinetics.

Your Profile:
You have a MBO 4 or HBO degree in a Chemical or biomedical direction (e.g. Laboratory technology, Biology and Medical Laboratory research, Microbiology, Forensic Science). You are able to work in an environment that requires strong collaborations within an international interdisciplinary team. Our main languages are both Dutch and English.

Conditions of employment:
A full-time temporary position (38 hours a week) as a lab technician. You will start on a temporary position for the duration of one year that -when satisfactory- will be extended. Your gross monthly salary will depend on experience and background.

Employer:
Synapse Research Institute is a spin-off company from the Maastricht University based in Maastricht with close ties to several Universities within the Netherlands and abroad. Our main goal is to diagnose, prevent and treat abnormalities of the blood such as bleeding and thrombosis. Within our institute we cover the range from basic research up to prototype assay/medicine/treatment. One of our main assays that we have developed within our institute is thrombin generation, an assay that very sensitively can measure a bleeding phenotype or a thrombotic phenotype. We have a diverse team of scientists ranging from technicians up to professors.

Additional information:
You can apply for this position by sending your motivation letter and Curriculum Vitae (in Dutch or English) to Dr. R. de Laat-Kremers (r.delaat@thrombin.com) or Dr. M. Ninivaggi (m.ninivaggi@thrombin.com) before 10-03-2020. We welcome you to contact either Dr. de Laat-Kremers or Dr. Ninivaggi for additional information about the vacancy.

Since we have a Scanning EM available at Synapse Research Institute, very interesting collaborations have been going on.

Did you know that: Prothrombin conversion is accelerated in the antiphospholipid syndrome and insensitive to thrombomodulin.

This article is published in collaboration with Vascular Medicine Division, Centre Hospitalier Régional Universitaire in Nancy (France).
Keypoints:
The rate of prothrombin conversion is elevated in APS patients, causing a hemostatic imbalance.
Also TG and prothrombin conversion are higher in APS patients with prior thrombosis than in patients without thrombosis.
