The Basic International Screening Course for Radiologists, held this week at the LRCB, is coming to a close. A big thank you to to all participants for being part of it!

Tijdens onze periodieke testen controleren we niet alleen de mammograaf maar ook de bekijkstations. We controleren onder andere het omgevingslicht, de weergavecurve van de monitor en eventuele artefacten.

We’re proud to share that our colleague’s article, as part of her PhD research, has just been published in European Radiology!

In this study, Tanya Geertse and her co-authors explored the use of “positive predictive value–recall diagrams” to monitor and improve radiologist performance in breast cancer screening.

Bij het LRCB kun je voor een groot deel je training zelf samenstellen. Wist je bijvoorbeeld dat wij ook ergonomietraining geven aan laboranten? Een juiste werkhouding zorgt er niet alleen voor dat er klachten voorkomen worden, maar komt ook de kwaliteit van het onderzoek ten goede.

Interesting fact!

If you have doubts as to whether the complete breast is depicted, you can measure the posterior ni**le line. The length of this line in the MLO view should be about the same as in the CC view; the difference should not exceed 0.5 cm. In this regard, it is important for both views to be compressed and spread out to the same degree. If the musculus pectoralis major is not visible in the CC view, measure the length up to the edge of the image. The posterior ni**le line should intersect the musculus pectoralis major at a 90° angle in the CC as well as MLO view.

Interessant weetje!

Bij twijfel of er voldoende is afgebeeld, kan de posterior-tepellijn gemeten worden. De lengte van deze lijn dient in de MLO-opname nagenoeg gelijk te zijn aan die in de CC-opname, een verschil van een halve centimeter is geoorloofd. Van belang hierbij is dat beide opnamen in gelijke mate gecomprimeerd en uitgestreken zijn. Mocht op de CC-opname geen musculus pectoralis major zichtbaar zijn, meet dan tot aan de beeldrand. Zowel bij de CC- als bij de MLO-opname moet de posterior-tepellijn een hoek van 90 graden met de musculus pectoralis major maken.

Last week, radiologists from Latvia visited the LRCB as part of the STRIVE project. This project, funded by UICC, is a collaboration between the LRCB and the University of Latvia / Riga East University Hospital. Its aim is to improve breast cancer screening in Latvia by implementing a comprehensive quality assurance programme based on the Dutch model.

We’re looking back on a good and productive week!

Interessant weetje!

De lateromediale (LM) en mediolaterale (ML) opnamen zijn horizontale projecties. De voorkeur gaat uit naar de LM-opname, die het meest zuiver lateraal kan worden uitgevoerd aangezien tijdens het positioneren en comprimeren geen hinder wordt ondervonden van de andere mamma.

Een LM- of ML-opname wordt gemaakt om de volgende redenen:
- Als plaatsbepaling van een laesie bij mammalokalisatie of histologische punctie
- Het beter afbeelden van een laesie in het lager gelegen axillaire gebied
- Het beter afbeelden van een laesie bij de borst-buikovergang
- Een laesie is slechts zichtbaar in één van de standaardprojecties
- Het aantonen of uitsluiten van overprojectie

Interesting fact!

The lateromedial (LM) and mediolateral (ML) views are horizontal projections. The LM view is preferred, as it allows for a true lateral image to be obtained more easily, since the other breast does not interfere during positioning and compression.

An LM or ML view is taken for the following reasons:
- To determine the location of a lesion for breast localization or histological biopsy
- To better visualize a lesion in the lower axillary region
- To better visualize a lesion at the inframammary angle
- When a lesion is only visible in one of the standard projections
- To confirm or exclude superposition
