Last week, radiologists from Latvia visited the LRCB as part of the STRIVE project. This project, funded by UICC, is a collaboration between the LRCB and the University of Latvia / Riga East University Hospital. Its aim is to improve breast cancer screening in Latvia by implementing a comprehensive quality assurance programme based on the Dutch model.

Fun fact!

De lateromediale (LM) en mediolaterale (ML) opnamen zijn horizontale projecties. De voorkeur gaat uit naar de LM-opname, die het meest zuiver lateraal kan worden uitgevoerd aangezien tijdens het positioneren en comprimeren geen hinder wordt ondervonden van de andere mamma.

Een LM- of ML-opname wordt gemaakt om de volgende redenen:
- Als plaatsbepaling van een laesie bij mammalokalisatie of histologische punctie
- Het beter afbeelden van een laesie in het lager gelegen axillaire gebied
- Het beter afbeelden van een laesie bij de borst-buikovergang
- Een laesie is slechts zichtbaar in één van de standaardprojecties
- Het aantonen of uitsluiten van overprojectie

Fun fact!

The lateromedial (LM) and mediolateral (ML) views are horizontal projections. The LM view is preferred, as it allows for a true lateral image to be obtained more easily, since the other breast does not interfere during positioning and compression.

An LM or ML view is taken for the following reasons:
- To determine the location of a lesion for breast localization or histological biopsy
- To better visualize a lesion in the lower axillary region
- To better visualize a lesion at the inframammary angle
- When a lesion is only visible in one of the standard projections
- To confirm or exclude superposition

Last week, three radiographers from Latvia visited the LRCB to attend various training sessions as part of the STRIVE program.

The goal of STRIVE is to improve the effectiveness of breast cancer screening in Latvia by implementing a comprehensive quality assurance programme, based on the Dutch model.

The training of the radiographers will continue in Riga this September.

Van 26 tot en met 30 mei vond er in Trieste, Italië een cursus fysica mammografie plaats georganiseerd door het atoomagentschap (IAEA) en het International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) voor fysici uit laag-lonen landen. Ruben van Engen heeft, namens het LRCB, tijdens de cursus presentaties gegeven en practica begeleid in een zeer stimulerende omgeving waarbij de deelnemers zeer leergierig waren.

From May 26 to May 30, a course on mammography physics was held in Trieste, Italy, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) for physicists from low-income countries. On behalf of the LRCB, Ruben van Engen gave presentations and supervised practical sessions during the course, in a highly stimulating environment where the participants were eager to learn.

Bad Pixel Map
Wekelijks voeren we kwaliteitscontroles uit op mammografen door het hele land. Op een mammograaf zijn tijdens deze wekelijkse kwaliteitscontrole diverse artefacten waargenomen. Zie foto 1 en 2.
Aan de hand hiervan is er een BPM (bad pixel map) kalibratie uit gevoerd. Dit had helaas niet het gewenste effect (foto 3).
Hierna is besloten om de detector te vervangen. Hiermee was het probleem uiteraard verholpen, zie foto 4.

Bad Pixel Map
We perform weekly quality checks on mammography machines throughout the country. During one of these weekly quality checks, various artifacts were observed on a mammography machine. See photos 1 and 2.
Based on these findings, a BPM (Bad Pixel Map) calibration was performed. Unfortunately, this did not have the desired effect (see photo 3).
It was then decided to replace the detector. This, of course, resolved the issue - see photo 4.
