Protect your skin against blue light! 💙

Blue light is emitted from the screens of our devices (phones, laptops and tablets). Studies have shown that extended exposure to this can lead to increased inflammation, the breakdown of healthy collagen and elastin, increased aging, and hyperpigmentation.

Now more than ever, many of us have had to adapt our lives to be in front of our screens more from zoom meetings to online learning and working from home.

So how can we protect the skin from blue light? It's recommended to use skincare products loaded with antioxidants, as well as niacinamide and zinc oxide. Some devices also have settings that disables blue light in favour of yellow light, making it less harsh on the eyes and skin.

I chose physical therapy path because I love helping people, and it seems very interesting to me. Physiotherapy is my passion and I am happy that I have found a way to combine my passion and work. My journey with physiotherapy has been going on over 18 years. I expand my knowledge and skills by participating in renowned courses, learning from physiotherapists, doctors and psychologists.

When I first embarked on the journey to pursue my master in physical therapy, I just knew it felt right. I loved fitness. I loved working out. I loved the way it made me feel and how that feeling spilled over into the rest of my life. Functioning at a high level is what made me the person I am today.

As a physical therapist, every day I have the opportunity to help people overcome physical and functional limitations in order to live their best lives now.

Your body releases cortisol in a daily pattern, peaking in the morning and decreasing in the evening. If you work night shifts for an extended period, this pattern may change.

𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐥
Too much cortisol can lead to both physical and emotional symptoms. Physical symptoms may include:
• weight gain, especially around your abdomen and face
• thin and fragile skin that is slow to heal
• acne
• female facial hair and irregular menstrual periods
• reduced fertility

Too much cortisol can also affect your mood. Emotional changes that can happen with Cushing's syndrome may include:
• depression
• anxiety
• mood swings
• difficulty concentrating
• lower s*x drive (libido)

Cortisol is a steroid hormone made by your 2 adrenal glands, located on top of each kidney. When you feel stressed, your body releases more cortisol into your bloodstream. Having the right cortisol balance is important for your health. Producing too much or too little cortisol can cause health problems.

Cortisol has many important functions, acting on different parts of your body. It can help:
📍 your body respond to stress or danger
📍 increase your body's metabolism of glucose
📍 control your heart rate and blood pressure
📍 reduce inflammation
📍 growth and development of an unborn baby

Cortisol is also needed for your 'fight or flight' response, which is your healthy, natural response to perceived threats.

Our primary goal at Massage Therapie Agnieszka is to help you discover your potential! Inherent to this goal is our desire to help you feel better, move better, and live better. We want to provide you with tools that enable you to move forward with confidence. As you improve your overall health, pain, stiffness, fatigue, and other symptoms will diminish or completely disappear.

Suggestions to improve health and wellness and decrease pain:
📍Breath. Breathing through your nose is imperative in order to achieve the optimal balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your bloodstream. With each breath your abdomen should expand slightly and your lower ribs should push outwards. You should not feel tension in your chest and neck while breathing at rest.

📍Meditation/mindfulness. Incorporating meditation/mindfulness centered around the breath is also very beneficial.

📍Go for a walk. If walking does not increase your symptoms, it's a great way to increase blood flow, reduce stress, and promote cardiorespiratory fitness.

📍Try ice or heat. In our experience some people report reduction in pain and stiffness related to the application of ice and/or heat.

📍Stay hydrated…with water. Drink ample water throughout the day. If you need a guideline, try to drink eight 8 glasses (250 ml) of water per day. Note this is a very general rule but if it helps you drink more water, great! Do not drink soda, juice, Gatorade, or other sugary drinks. Limit caffeine and alcohol consumption (remember these are drugs).

📍Get some sun. Sunlight has many benefits – mental, physical, and emotional. Moderate your sun intake – start by exposing your skin to 5-10 minutes of sunlight 3x/week without sunscreen (sunscreen will impair Vitamin D production, and many Dutch people are vitamin D deficient). Discuss with your physician if you have had or are high risk for skin cancer. Time in nature enhances physical and mental wellbeing.

Walking is a great way to improve or maintain your overall health. Just 30 minutes every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance. Unlike some other forms of exercise, walking is free and doesn’t require any special equipment or training.

𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠
You carry your own body weight when you walk. This is known as weight-bearing exercise. Some of the benefits include:

📍 increased cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lung) fitness
📍 reduced risk of heart disease and stroke
📍 improved management of conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), 📍 high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes
📍 stronger bones and improved balance
📍 increased muscle strength and endurance
📍 reduced body fat

𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞
If it’s too difficult to walk for 30 minutes at one time, do regular small bouts (10 minutes) 3 times per day and gradually build up to longer sessions.

Physical activity built into a daily lifestyle plan is also one of the most effective ways to assist with weight loss and keep weight off once it’s lost.

Some suggestions to build walking into your daily routine include:
👉 take the stairs instead of the lift (for at least part of the way)
👉 get off public transport one stop earlier and walk to work or home
👉 walk (don’t drive) to the local shops
👉 walk the dog (or your neighbour’s dog)
