In January 2022, Crimson Historians & Urbanists completed an area oriented cultural-historical exploration with a transformation framework to the First Dutch Cement Industry factory site in Maastricht, commissioned by Atelier Rijksbouwmeester, the Cultural Heritage Agency, the Province of Limburg and the Municipality of Maastricht. The marl extraction and cement production on the factory site recently came to a definitive end, possibly opening up a new perspective for the site.

Michelle Provoost was part of the Last Lecture series at the Dag van de Stad (Day of the City) last week in Heerlen – a yearly event for over 1000 urban professionals and policymakers, organized by the national government together with various municipalities, and knowledge institutes. In her talk, Michelle looked back at the past years of Laissez-faire politics and called on everyone in the audience who is part of a local, provincial or national government, to make the most of their own position and to pave the way for change. To take action 'from within', and to adjust or stretch the rules to maximize support for those who have the ideas that we so desperately need to shape our future.

On the 25th of May, the city council of Purmerend approved the masterplan for Waterlandkwartier – the area around the city's main train station. Crimson served as an external expert to the planning team consisting of BURA Urbanism and LOLA landscape architects. We advised the team on the cultural-historical characteristics of the area and how the original design principles and ideas of this New Town from the 1960s and 70s, could inspire the future development of the city.

On Friday 26 March, Michelle Provoost received the prestigious Rotterdam Maaskant Prize for her contribution to architectural and urban thinking, combining reflection with action and for engaging others with the fate of the city through her own, original vision.

For the occasion, Gabrielle Provaas and Rob Schröder made a documentary, following her in various settings. From the lecture hall of the Independent School for the City, she talks about her love for Hugh Maaskant, and how the building in which the school resides - also a Maaskant - can be preserved. Provoost also takes the viewer to the satellite town of Hoogvliet, where she worked with Crimson on Wimby! - a unique urban transformation project full of experimentation in architecture, urban planning, culture and education.

The 20 minute documentary has English subtitles.

Last week, the WRR (The Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy) published their report “Living together in diversity” - stating that the current Dutch migration policy which is based on the assumption that migration is a temporary phenomenon, is outdated. “We really need to adjust the image that migration ends, and we have to accept that The Netherlands is an immigration country” according to the WRR.

From 2016 till 2019 Crimson worked on a self-initiated research project titled a City of Comings and Goings, which explored the spatial impact of migration on Western European cities, starting from the premise that migration is a structural and permanent factor of (European) cities, which means that they will become increasingly characterized by temporal stays and dynamic lifestyles.

Our research resulted in an exhibition at the Central Pavilion of the Venice Architecture Biennale 2018 and a book with essays, a catalogue of projects and a manifesto-like introductory essay, that demonstrates how planning and architectural design can play a crucial role in making the Western European city into a resilient and exciting City of Comings and Goings.

In the book ‘City of Comings and Goings’ Crimson brings together a cast of European cities that are marked by migration represented through authoratitive essays by local scholars.

Last week, the municipality of Rotterdam approved RED Company's and Powerhouse Company's masterplan for the transformation of the Codrico factory site at the Rijnhaven into a living-work-leisure area. Beside Powerhouse Architects, the design team consists of Mecanoo, SHoP Architects and DELVA Landscape Architecture Urbanism.

Part of this masterplan is the transformation of the monumental CO-OP flour factory. Crimson Historians and Urbanists carried out the architectural-historical research that underpins the design for the redevelopment of the factory into housing and more by Office Winhov.
