One of the clearest signs that therapy is working is when change becomes noticeable in everyday life.

I think many of us have experienced this moment. Someone offers well-meaning advice like “just think positively” or “cheer up”, and instead of feeling better, it creates a subtle tension. Almost as if part of you is thinking, “but what about how I actually feel?”

This reflects something important about how the mind works.

The brain and nervous system do respond to how we think, what we focus on, and the language we use. So, positive thinking can help regulate the system. But if difficult feelings are dismissed or pushed aside, they tend to remain active in the background.

At the same time, focusing too deeply on problems when we are already overwhelmed can reinforce anxiety and overthinking.

Effective emotional regulation sits somewhere in between. It involves acknowledging what is present, while also guiding the mind (often via the body) towards a calmer and more balanced state.

A lot of expat women I work with are doing objectively really well.
They’ve built a life abroad. They’re capable, responsible, high-functioning.

But there can be an undercurrent of:
– pressure
– overthinking
– difficulty switching off

And a list of questions like:
– Why can’t I switch off?
– Why do I overthink everything?
– Why do I feel anxious when my life is actually… good?

But these question often keep you stuck.
Because they focus on the symptoms, not what’s underneath.

So, when we notice this pattern, I find it helps to first get curious about what is underneath:

What's your system trying to keep up with?
What's it trying to hold together?
What feels slightly unsafe?

Especially as an expat, there’s often more going on beneath the surface than it seems.

And when you start to understand that, the anxiety stops feeling so random and that in itself can be a relief. The part that's been busy asking “why am I like this?” can calm down a bit. Only then can solutions start to flow.

So, similar to how Gabor Maté says, ask “Not why the addiction, but why the pain?”
I'd say, "ask not why the anxiety but what it's trying to manage?"

Anxiety isn’t the problem, it's a response.

“Anxiety is a nervous system state. You can’t simply think your way out of it.”
Many people who experience anxiety are thoughtful, self-aware and capable. They often try to manage it by analysing their thoughts, finding explanations, or trying to “stay rational”.
