Special Time is one of our five Hand In Hand Parenting tools.

You turn off/remove all distractions, announce Special Time (or whatever name you and your child have given it), set a timer (10-30mins) and let your child know that for the period on the timer, they have your undivided attention and you will play whatever they would like to. If they ask for something against the rules or unsafe, try and see if you can make a version of it possible and explain that it is only during these special periods that it will be okay. If they want screens or something that doesn't allow you to be fully present with each other, try and alternate with that activity and something more immersive.

Then just DELIGHT in them and allow them to guide you on whatever journey they would like. Having your undiluted attention is so nourishing for your child and giving yourself a specific period to ENJOY them is helpful for you too.

So how old they have to be to start? It doesn't matter... even babies can give us cues. Just get close to them and look into their eyes or follow their gaze, mimic their movements... let yourself see what happens. Tweens/teens may think they are too cool, so if announcing it doesn't work, try just finding incidental moments to step into it.
