Let's talk about eye health. As I was putting together a salad for my mom who suffers from macular degeneration I got inspired to post about it. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are antioxidants which are very good for eye health. This is why I don't throw away carrot tops and use them in salads. Other leafy greens, asparagus, broccoli, carrots and egg yolks are other great sources of these antioxidants. Other important micronutrients for eye health are vitamin C (eg. bell peppers, citrus fruit, kiwi) beta-carotene (eg. pumkin, carrots, sweet potatoes), vitamin E (eg. Avocados, almonds), omega 3 fatty acids (eg. Wild salmon, sardines, seaweed) and zinc (eg. Oysters, red meat, nuts/seeds).

The above are just some possible symptoms that may occur with cortisol imbalances. I'm not referring to medically low levels of cortisol (Addison's disease) or high cortisol (Cushing's syndrome). I'm referring to slight imbalances that can still affect daily life and well being that are not caused by a medical problem such as a tumor in the pituitary gland or in the adrenal glands or certain disorders. Cortisol is most interesting when we measure it at different (and specific) times of the day as it fluctuates throughout the day. Moreover, looking at other hormones together with cortisol levels can give us insight about a person's adrenal health. Many of us in today's world suffer from this and think feeling constantly tired but getting through the day with caffeine, struggling with sleep and running from one appointment to the next is normal, perhaps struggling to find time for everything - work, family and the many pressures in life (this often happens with perfectionism). Everyone has heard of the term "adrenal fatigue" or "burn out" however these terms are not supported by science. That's because it is not due to our adrenal glands being exhausted, but rather due to cortisol resistance or other mechanisms that protect us from high cortisol resulting from stress, which ends up leading to low cortisol levels. Whatever the term or mechanism may be, I have certainly fealt these symptoms and have had the corresponding low hormone levels to go with the symptoms! Moreover, I have seen many others feel the same. You don't have to have a disease before feeling like you cannot function well and asking for help. Taking time for oneself is not easy for some people and some people have a lower stress tolerance than others. Moreover, some people have a hard time setting boundaries or putting themselves first. Walking in nature, meditation, yoga, breathing exercises and baths have helped me the most 💙

I'm seeing so many people coughing with a lot of excess mucous, and I just wanted to add a quick reminder that certain foods will help recover faster, while others can make the situation worse. Gluten and dairy are foods that are not easy for the body to digest. Ofcourse some people will have an easier time than other people and certain dairy and gluten containing foods are easier to digest than others. However, generally, when going through illnesses these are not foods I recommend. Instead things like easy to digest soups, herbal teas and wild caught fish are foods that work best. Different people will have different foods that will increase mucous. For example, for some people eggs or bananas can also increase the sensation of more mucous. Listen to your body! And if nothing helps, testing may be warranted. Wishing you a healthy rest of winter! 💙
