🚫 Can autism be misdiagnosed?

Yes — especially in young children. Some behaviors that look like autism can actually be caused by speech delays, sensory difficulties, ADHD, dyspraxia, anxiety, or emotional overload. Having autistic traits does not always mean a child has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Early diagnosis is complex because children may struggle to communicate, feel overwhelmed in new environments, or react differently during short clinical assessments. A child who appears withdrawn or nonverbal at an appointment may behave completely differently at home.

That’s why accurate diagnosis should never rely on one short visit. It requires time, repeated observations, and a multidisciplinary approach involving neurologists, psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and other specialists.

A misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate therapy, increased stress, and delays in getting the right support. Neuropsychological assessment can help identify why certain behaviors happen and highlight both strengths and challenges.

How many words should a child say at 1 year old? 👶💬

It’s important to understand: words are not the most important thing happening at this age.

Here’s what we actually expect to see around 12 months — and why it matters:

✨ Pointing
One of the most important skills at this age. A child points not only to ask for something, but also to share: “Look what I see!”

Pointing is a direct precursor to speech. When a child points to a bird and looks back at you, they are communicating: “I want to share my world with you.”

✨ Joint Attention
Your child follows your gaze or gesture when you point to something. This is called joint attention — a foundational skill for learning through language.

✨ Understanding Speech
By 1 year, children usually understand far more than they can say. They recognize their name, understand simple requests, and respond to familiar words.

✨ First Words
Around this age, children may say 1–5 meaningful words. A “word” doesn’t have to sound perfect — consistent sounds with clear meaning count too.
“Woof” for dog = a word.
“Ga”for grandma = a word.

✨ Communication Rituals
Waving “bye-bye,” playing peekaboo, handing you toys — these are early forms of conversation and social interaction.

At 1 year old, we look not only at the number of words, but at whether a child wants and is able to communicate — through gestures, eye contact, sounds, and interaction ❤️

This is the foundation on which speech and learning will grow.

Why are realistic images helpful in speech therapy? 🧠🗣️

Realistic images are easier to recognize and understand because they look like real-life objects and situations. This helps children and adults connect words with everyday experiences more naturally.

They support:
✨ vocabulary development
✨ language comprehension
✨ sentence building
✨ attention and motivation

Using real-life visuals also makes it easier to transfer learned language skills into daily communication. 🌍

Your 3-year-old isn’t talking yet?
This can feel worrying for many parents — but every child develops language at their own pace. Still, early support can make a big difference. 💬✨

Here are a few things to pay attention to:
• Does your child understand simple instructions?
• Do they use gestures, eye contact, or sounds to communicate?
• Do they respond to their name?
• Do they try to imitate words or sounds?

What you can do:
✔️ Schedule a hearing check with your pediatrician
✔️ Create a language-rich environment: read, sing, and talk during everyday activities
✔️ Reduce screen time
✔️ Avoid pressure — language doesn’t develop through force
✔️ Seek early speech and language support if you have concerns

Early intervention is not “too early” — it’s giving your child the best opportunity to grow and communicate confidently. 🌱

📩 You can book a consultation and diagnostic session to better understand your child’s communication development and receive personalized guidance.

💙 Why You Don’t Need to Be Afraid of Autism

Hearing the word “autism” can feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t mean something is “wrong” with your child.

✨ Autism is not a loss—it’s a different way of experiencing the world.
🧠 Many autistic children learn, grow, and develop—just in their own way and at their own pace.
🤝 With the right support, they can communicate, connect, and thrive.
💬 Some may not speak, but they can still express themselves in meaningful ways.
🌱 Early support helps build skills—not change who your child is.

💡 Your child is still the same child you love. A diagnosis doesn’t take anything away—it helps you understand them better.

👉 You are not alone, and support is available.

🚨 Early Signs of Autism in Children

Not every child shows all signs – but these can be important clues:

👀 Limited or no eye contact
🧸 Prefers to play alone, little interest in others
👉 Doesn’t point or share things (“Look!”)
🗣️ Little or no speech / delayed language development
🔁 Repetitive movements (e.g. hand flapping, spinning)
🔊 Sensitive to sounds, lights, or touch
📵 Doesn’t respond to their name
📏 Needs routines, struggles with changes. 👉 If you’re unsure: talk to a pediatrician or speech therapist

This isn’t “bad behavior.”
This isn’t just a “phase.”

👉 These are signs of how a child experiences the world through their sensory system.

🧠 The image shows 8 sensory systems that shape a child’s behavior:

👀 Visual — light, colors, movement
👂 Auditory — sounds, volume, noise
✋ Tactile — touch, textures, temperature
👃 Olfactory — smells and sensitivity to odors
👅 Oral (gustatory) — taste, chewing, food textures
🤸‍♂️ Vestibular — balance and movement
💪 Proprioceptive — body awareness and coordination
❤️ Interoceptive — internal signals (hunger, discomfort, emotions)

❗ When these systems don’t work together smoothly, a child may:
• cover ears or avoid noise
• refuse certain clothes or foods
• seek constant movement (jumping, spinning)
• have meltdowns or seem “overreactive”
• struggle with attention and speech
❓ Who can help if you notice these signs?

👩‍⚕️ Occupational therapist (OT) — works on sensory integration and daily skills
🧠 Child psychologist — helps with behavior, emotions, regulation
🗣️ Speech therapist — supports communication and speech development
👨‍⚕️ Pediatric neurologist — evaluates the nervous system

Speech therapy is not only about speaking.
It’s about communication in every form.

It’s about understanding, gestures, eye contact, signs, pictures, sounds, and finding a voice — even before words exist.

For children who don’t speak yet, speech therapy helps them be understood, express needs, share emotions, and connect with the world around them. Words may come later, but communication starts now.

Because every child deserves to be heard — even without spoken words. 💙

Why is learning shapes important for speech development in children?

Learning shapes helps children build vocabulary, understand directions, describe objects, and improve communication through play.
