De Stichting Books Away From Home kondigt trots haar nieuwste boekenproject voor vluchtelingenkinderen aan, het “Sunbird” project, vernoemd naar een klein vogeltje dat zowel in Iran als Afghanistan leeft. Na het succes van ons eerste (en lopende) project voor Oekraïense vluchtelingenkinderen, bieden we nu vijf Perzisch-talige kinderboeken aan voor Iraanse en Afghaanse vluchtelingenkinderen. Veel van deze kinderen hebben geen Perzisch-talige boeken meer en het is voor hun ook niet eenvoudig om boeken in hun moedertaal te krijgen. (Voor wie het nog niet wist: zowel Iraanse als Afghaanse kinderen kunnen Perzisch lezen, wat dit project dubbel nuttig maakt!)

Steeds meer leerkrachten realiseren zich hoe belangrijk het is om, naast het leren van het Nederlands, ook aandacht te besteden aan de eerste taal van hun buitenlandse leerlingen. Boeken in de eigen taal, met illustraties die het leven in het thuisland weerspiegelen, zijn vertrouwd en herkenbaar. Ze kunnen deze kinderen helpen zich op hun gemak te voelen en de omschakeling te ondersteunen naar hun nieuwe taal en omgeving. Ook kunnen ze een verbindend element vormen tussen vluchtelingenkinderen en hun nieuwe klasgenoten. Onze vijf Perzische boeken zijn een uitstekende aanvulling op de meertalige bibliotheek op school en/of in het klaslokaal. Het zijn geen vertalingen – de boeken zijn in het Perzisch geschreven en zijn exclusief verkrijgbaar via de website van Books Away From Home.

Scholen wordt gevraagd om de zeer lage kostprijs te betalen van €11,- per set, exclusief verzendkosten. Een set bevat vijf heel uiteenlopende boeken, prachtig geïllustreerd op licht glanzend papier en met een stevige kaft. De boeken zijn allemaal gelezen en goedgekeurd door Stichting Keihan, die een brug wil slaan tussen Nederland en Afghanistan om de integratie van de Afghaanse gemeenschap binnen Nederland succesvol te laten verlopen. Alle vijf boeken zijn te zien op onze website, samen met een korte beschrijving en de aanbevolen leeftijdsgroep.

Over ons: Stichting Books Away From Home (BAFH) is opgericht op 18 juli 2022. De stichting heeft een ANBI-status. Ons doel is het beschikbaar maken van boeken aan vluchtelingenkinderen uit diverse landen en taalgebieden, in hun moedertaal. De boeken zijn niet alleen belangrijk voor deze kinderen, maar ook voor de scholen waar ze onderwijs krijgen.

بنیاد BAFH کتاب‌های ویژه‌ی کودکان را به زبان مادری برای کودکان اوکراینی و کودکان فارسی زبان، تهیه می‌کند.
هم اکنون پنج کتاب مصور به زبان فارسی برای کودکان فارسی زبان چاپ شده و آماده توزیع هستند.
والدین کودکان فارسی زبان مقیم کشورهای اروپایی و سایر کشورها می‌توانند به طور مستقیم این کتاب‌ها را از وب‌سایت بنیاد برای کودکان خود سفارش دهند.
این کتاب‌ها برای مهاجران و پناهندگان رایگان هستند، سفارش دهنده‌ها تنها هزینه پُست/ انتقال را چیزی حدود 7 یورو پرداخت خواهند کرد. البته هزینه پست بستگی به مسافت بین کشورها دارد و این یک قیمت میانگین است.

A happy announcement from the Books Away From Home Foundation:
Our first 5 Afghan native-language children's books are *now available* for ordering. We welcome orders from schools, refugee shelters, refugee families, hospitals... all over the world. As a bonus: these books can also be read by children from Iran! The importance of first-language preservation, as educators and learning specialists are increasingly discovering, cannot be overemphasized, and these books will be a welcome addition to any multi-lingual library.
A set of 5 Afghan books (5 different titles) costs 11 euros + shipping and handling. The books are completely FREE to refugee shelters and individual families, though we do ask for shipping and handling to keep our costs down.
Orders should be placed via email, to info@booksawayfromhome.org. Please include name, address, number of sets required, and indicate whether you are a school, shelter, family, or hospital. We will then let you know the shipping rates to your specific location and you can decide if you want to proceed with the order.

What IS the Books Away From Home Foundation? What do we do and why do we do it?
In April, 2022, several weeks after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, we launched the first of our projects to provide refugee children with books in their native language. Within a year, 20,000 full-color picture books were printed and distributed among Ukrainian refugee children in 7 countries, in schools, shelters, and families.
But that was only the beginning. There are millions of refugee children from other parts of the world who have limited or no access to books in their native tongue: children from Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Myanmar, Eritrea, Africa… the list, unfortunately goes on.
With that in mind, we developed our second project, “Sunbird,” which provides books for refugee children from Afghanistan and Iran. Plans for the (near) future include a follow-up to the Ukranian project and an exploration of the possibilities for a Syrian project.
Each of our book projects focuses on a specific language group: the choice of language is determined by urgency (how and where can we be most effective?) as well as availability of suitable books and/or book files. There are other important factors: what, if anything, is already available to these children? Will a particular book have cultural or political repercussions? Fortunately, we have a wide community of educators, reading specialists, translators, publishers, and native speakers with whom we can exchange ideas and discuss new options.
The process that follows is both challenging and exciting: we search for publishers in the land of origin, negotiate fair and reasonable prices for the use of their material, work together with Ten Brink Publishers here in the Netherlands to produce affordable books of the highest possible quality, and oversee the entire distribution process.
Of course, none of this would be feasible without funds. Much of our work consists of crowdfunding and application to potential grant-givers. Members of our team receive no financial compensation. It is truly a labor of love -- and learning!

The BOOKS AWAY FROM HOME FOUNDATION is proud to announce its newest book project for refugee children: *Sunbird*, named after a little bird that makes its home in both Iran and Afghanistan. After the success of our first (and ongoing) project for Ukrainian refugee kids, we are now in the process of selecting 5-10 picture books in Persian, for Iranian and Afghan refugee children now living in Europe. And who continue to arrive. Most of these children have no books of their own, and it's not easy for them to find books in their native language. (For those who didn't yet know, most Iranian and Afghan children can read Persian, which makes this project particularly beneficial!)

Thanks to TUTI Books (Iran), the Afghanistan Center at Kabul University (ACKU), the Gahwara Organization, the Dutch-Afghan foundation KEIHAN, the Institute for Research on the History of Children’s Literature (Iran), Ten Brink Publishers and a growing group of enthusiastic readers and specialists, we expect to be able to provide books in the coming months. But we need your help.

Donations will be used in two ways:

- to order a wide range of beautiful, full-color, Persian language children's books (at the special low rate of 2 euros per book) from TUTI Books, which will then be distributed from our office in the Netherlands
- to fund the printing of the first round of Afghan books: approximately 5,000 books in total.

Once all these books are printed and distributed to their new owners, we will begin another donation “action”, for a new round of books. The books are absolutely free to refugee children, refugee families, and refugee shelters. Schools, libraries and hospitals are asked to pay the (low) cost price. In all cases, we ask only to be reimbursed for the cost of shipping.

The Books Away From Home Foundation is a registered public benefit organization. We are and will remain entirely non-profit.
