SUMMA Symposium SUMMA Symposium
Sex and Gender in Medicine: Venus, Mars and Beyond...

June 18th 2019

The SUMMA Symposium is organized every year by a group of enthusiastic students. Since SUMMA is a graduate medicine course, which focuses both on clinical practice and fundamental research, the symposium aims at making a link between patient care and basic scientific inquiry. The topic of the symposium changes every year and this time it is Fountain of Youth: the biological process of aging and the therapeutics to delay, arrest, or even reverse it. The choice to focus on senescence is because it a rising interest in the medical world. What are the mechanisms behind aging and should we consider these processes pathological? The SUMMA symposium is meant to provide an interdisciplinary approach to the body-mind relationship, shedding light on a vastly unexplored territory. Both Dutch and international speakers with different backgrounds will present their research and findings on this occasion, making for an interesting day and providing us with food for thought. Don’t miss the SUMMA Symposium 2017, “Fountain of Youth: the biological process of aging and the therapeutics to delay, arrest, or even reverse it”, which will take place on the 20th of June 2017 at the Universiteitsweg 98, Utrecht, form 9:00AM til 4:30PM.

and with that, we will also be presenting our last parallel speaker: Dr. Math Pieters.

Dr. Math Pieters has been the head of the laboratory for assisted reproductive techniques (ART) (Voortplantingslaboratorium) at the UMC Utrecht since 2015. In his parallel session he will discuss different aspects of reproductive work at the UMC Utrecht.

Whereas IVF initially was designed to overcome female infertility factors, working in a laboratory for assisted reproduction has nowadays gone far beyond these techniques. In cases of infertility of unknown cause the work in the lab might, in several cases, disclose the real infertility factor. Many things are possible in reproductive labs and discussion on ethics take place on all the aspects.

See you there!

Introducing another set of parallel speakers: Esmée Lindenbergh & Dr. Roos de Jonge.

Topic: Androgenitaal Syndroom

You’ve just given birth: the doctors tell you they are not sure if your baby is a (little) boy or a (little) girl. You need to wait 6 days before the test results come back from the lab. How does the news affect parents and other members of the family? In addition to the inevitable medical issues what
other challenges will this bring?

A heartfelt story from a mother of a 9 year old girl with AGS (UK: CAH).

Unfortunately this parallel session will only be held in Dutch. Interested? Sign up now!

It's time for us to reveal another speaker!

The way we've organised the symposium is that everyone can attend the first three plenary sessions and after lunch we will be dividing into smaller groups to then focus interests during two parallel sessions. For each parallel session, you will have the choice of three different speakers and their own topic of expertise. As the sessions will be held in smaller groups, they can be more interactive.

And today we're introducing one of the parallel speakers and his topic of interest: Dr. Jan Kroon – Leiden University Medical Center

His latest research focuses on deciphering why GR signaling is s*xually dimorphic, and investigates how androgen receptor signaling influences GR action in metabolic tissues. During the symposium he will elaborate on the interaction between the stress hormone cortisol and the s*x hormone testosterone (present in both men and women), and how this contributes to the development of metabolic diseases.

https://www.bijniernet.nl/…/man-vrouw-verschillen-jan-kroon/

Dr. Kroon was educated at the University of Leiden (B.Sc.) and the VU University Amsterdam (M.Sc.), including a period abroad at Imperial College London. His PhD-project (2012-2016) investigated GR function in prostate cancer. Dr. Kroon started his first postdoc position in the group of Prof. Onno Meijer, where he examined GR signaling in metabolic disease. During this period he evaluated the utility of selective GR modulators in models for Cushing’s disease, obesity and liver steatosis.

Intrigued? Come to the symposium to find out more!

Jan Kroon blogt over zijn onderzoek naar de wisselwerking tussen stresshormonen en geslachtshormonen en of deze anders is bij mannen of vrouwen.

Next up: the second plenary speaker! Topic: BRAIN.

Dr. Rachel Brouwer – University Medical Center Utrecht

The most consistent finding comparing female and male brains is a 10% difference in volume. Despite this difference in overall size, differences between adult female and male brains are rather subtle. In puberty and adolescence, there are pronounced differences in the developmental trajectory of brain morphology. Girls generally show an earlier start of brain development that is observed in the teenage years, matching the earlier start of puberty in girls compared with boys. This talk will focus on the different trajectories of development, and discuss the potential influence of hormones on brain development.

Dr. Brouwer obtained her PhD in the field of mathematics at the Center of Mathematics and Computer Science in 2005. Changing course, she subsequently started working at the department of psychiatry at the UMCU and currently works as an assistant professor in neuroimaging.

Dr. Brouwer’s main interests lie in the development of the brain during puberty. As the senior investigator on the BrainSCALE project, a longitudinal study that investigates brain development and cognition during adolescence, she examines to what extent genes, environment and hormones influence brain development. She will provide a neuroscientific perspective on how brain development in puberty differs between men and women.

We have been actively searching for speakers who are experts in their field relating to S*x and Gender in Medicine. And we are pleased to present our first plenary session speaker: Angela Maas!

Prof. dr. Angela Maas will be elucidating the vast and fascinating differences between men and women specifically in relation to her area of interest Cardiology. She has made vital contributions to this field: heart disease in women has never been understood better, but there's still work to do. The female heart has been neglected in research in the past, and with differences in symptoms and thus therapies between men and women, this is definitely a topic worth discussing.

Angela Maas has been a cardiologist since 1988. Over the past 27 years she has specialized in heart disease in women. Since May 2012 she holds a chair in ‘Cardiology for Women’ at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The main focus of her work are cardiac symptoms in women at middle-age and the role of female-specific risk factors in (early) heart disease. In the past years she started an expert center for microvascular coronary disease at the Radboudumc. In 2015 she initiated the Dutch SCAD registry (coronary dissections) and she is now developing the theme cardio-oncology for women treated for breast cancer. Her aim is to widely implement a more gender sensitive cardiology care and to make the cardiology community friendlier for women. She has been awarded by the Dutch society of female physicians (2010), Libelle Magazine (2010), the Radboudumc (2014), ‘VrouwenvanNu’ (2015) and was knighted to Officer of Oranje Nassau in 2017. She is listed as one of the most powerful women in Dutch healthcare (Opzij 2011-2018). In 2014 she initiated the Radboudumc fund Heart for Women (www.hartvoorvrouwen.nl) to collect funding for innovative project in cardiology care for women. In May 2019 she released her book: ‘HartvoorVrouwen’, Arbeiderspers, to explain heart disease in women to a broader public. She was recently elected to be the UN representative 2020 of the Dutch Women’s council.

As a key player in the human body, the heart needs to be fully acknowledged for all it is worth. We can't wait to hear what Angela Maas has in store for us. Are you ready?

Welcome to the official page for this year's SUMMA Symposium!

S*x and Gender in Medicine: Venus, Mars and Beyond...

S*x and gender are current and controversial topics, as they touch upon our identity as individuals. The symposium will explore s*x and gender development as well as s*x and gender differences in clinical practice and research. Furthermore, with gender reassignment we go beyond the definition of gender. The day will consist of several lectures, pitches and a panel discussion.

This symposium is for (bio)medical students as well as researchers, medical specialists, or anyone interested in the topic. Will we see you there?
