With conventional citrus, post-harvest fungicides such as imazalil and thiabendazole are commonly used to extend shelf life. European legislation even requires labels such as: “Peel not suitable for consumption.”

At the same time, citrus peel is increasingly part of daily consumption:
• lemon zest in cooking
• citrus slices in drinks
• mandarins peeled by hand and eaten directly

Citrus peel also contains valuable compounds such as flavonoids, antioxidants and essential oils, making peel quality more relevant than ever.

This growing awareness is reflected in the increasing demand for organic citrus with untreated peel. ()

International Day of Peasant Struggle may have passed — the reality has not.
Smallholder farmers continue to face structural challenges: climate volatility, price pressure, limited land access, and barriers to sustainable production.

During a recent visit to Peru, partners Pronatur SAC and Jalhuca Perú SAC showed how strong organisation across the supply chain enables better control over quality. Different models, one common factor: aligned structures from grower to market.

By organising smallholder farmers and working in long-term partnerships, consistency in both quality and supply becomes achievable.

At Eosta, the focus is on strengthening these networks — connecting growers to the European market and supporting more structured, resilient production systems.

In an increasingly unpredictable environment, strong grower organisation is not optional. It is fundamental to quality, reliability, and the future of sustainable agriculture.

One of our growers in Kenya shows how Fairtrade works in practice.
The Murang’a South Growers Group, part of the Mavuno organic avocado network, received a Fairtrade Premium. The farmers themselves decided how to invest it. Their choice: goats.

Each village receives a goat owned by the cooperative. The communities benefit from milk, additional income opportunities, and stronger resilience for farming households. A simple, locally meaningful investment chosen by the farmers themselves.
