Happy Pride month, everyone! June seems like a great opportunity to share some important information about the Autistic community that we serve as therapists. A 2021 study from the University of Cambridge has revealed just how common it is for Autistic individuals to identify as a sexual orientation other than heterosexual.
The study included 1,183 Autistic and 1,203 Allistic individuals and asked them to self-report their sexual orientation as either asexual, bisexual, hetereosexual, homosexual, or "other." They found that Autistic adolescents and adults were approximately 8 times more likely than their Allistic peers to identify as a either asexual or "other." Autistic AMAB participants were also 3.5 times more likely to identify as bisexual than their Allistic counterparts, and Autistic AFAB participants were 3 times more likely to identify as homosexual than their Allistic counterparts. Additionally, 12.6% of the Autistic participants identified as transgender, while only 2.0% of the Allistic participants said the same.
As a bisexual, neurodivergent BCBA, Pride month holds a very special place in my heart. This is a month where I not only feel loved and supported by the people around me, but I also get to offer that same love and respect towards the individuals to whom I have dedicated my life's work. This month, instead of buying a rainbow flag from a mega-corporation and calling your work "done," please consider supporting the LGBTQIA+ community in one of the following ways:
- Attend or volunteer at your local pride events
- Make a purchase from an LGBTQIA+ owned business
- Donate to The Trevor Project, a non-profit su***de prevention organization that provides 24/7 crisis support services and advocacy for LGBTQIA+ youth
- Engage in active listening
- Ask your LGBTQIA+ friends what would make them feel supported
I hope you have a safe and empowering Pride month β€οΈπ§‘πππ©΅ππ
