MEASURING THE NOSEBAND! 🐴✨🔦
A few days ago we checked how the noseband affects the horse while riding, this was the first time in Finland with this equipment! 🇫🇮🥳
Leena and her lovely gelding Sandman got to test their noseband while their training.
📍 We performed the test ridden in walk, trot and canter. First the noseband was fitted with 2 fingers, then with 1 finger between the horses nasal plane and the noseband.
So how did that go?
2 FINGERS ✌️
🔦 The first test was nice and relaxed, the noseband didn't seem to be bother the horse at all, the mouth was quiet and the rider said her horse felt just very normal. The only moment when there was a few kg applied on the measurement device was when the horse gently licked his lip while swallowing.
Even in transitions there was not much to see in the pressure. Looks good, feels good 😊 👍
1 FINGER 👉
🔦 Then we tested what happens if the noseband is just a little tighter, with 1 finger fit.
The first thing the rider said was that the horse felt a bit more tense in his neck. The horse felt somehow stabile in front, but yet stiffer and not as sensitive for her aids as usual, there was also a tiny difference in how balanced the horse was. Right away it was shown in measurement a bit more pressure while moving, it's also good to remember that in all measurements the gait, speed etc always plays a role. The surprise was, that there were constant up to 10kg spikes in the pressure, and once even 20kg against the noseband without the horse even opening his mouth. This was quite surprising, as the horse didn't show any mouth opening or other signs of clear discomfort than just a very slight stiffening that's not typical for this horse. For some, even the 1 finger fit may feel a little loose, hope this quick test helps to loosen the noseband a little more ✨
🔥 This measurement was a good reminder, that the good old TWO FINGER RULE is again good in practice! If you think between one and two fingers, pick two! ✌️
✅ Always check the noseband tightness between the nasal plane and the noseband. When you fit the noseband with 2 fingers on top, there will be some space on the sides of the noseband. When the noseband is correctly fitted, it will not bother the horse, also just a bit looser noseband is not a bad idea either.
This measurement was done in Newtons, to roughly make this result into kilograms, just remove the last 1 zeros off the chart (100N is roughly around 10kg) 🤓👍
More measurements to follow ! 💖
