iSTEPup student overview: 70 students in 10 countries!

The iSTEPup Foundation supports 70 students with a scholarship, which enables them to realize their dream of becoming a healthcare professional! In 10 different countries in Africa and South America, we currently support 23 nurses and midwifes, 8 clinical officers, 5 pharmacists and 3 doctors in training. More and more students have completed their studies and are now working as a healthcare professional in their own country!

Student update: Fergusson Lemani, Nursing, Malawi

“I successfully completed all courses in both first and second semesters. This has not only deepened my understanding of Nursing and Midwifery but also helped me develop valuable skills such as employing major nursing theories and scientific methods in various activities and encounters as well as understanding better the basics of anatomy and physiology which I believe will help me to easily build on future knowledge that I am yet to acquire during this program. Beyond academics, I have also been involved in various extracurricular activities such as group work, volunteering and various kinds of sports that have enriched my university experience. These experiences have helped me develop important life skills, such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
I look forward to sharing my future progress and achievements with you!"

Graduation update: Nurse Anna Marie Sambou, the Gambia!

"With a heart full of gratitude I write to express my deepest appreciation to the entire organisation of istepup, for a trusting and investing in the education of a girl child. I completed my studies last year April, sat my national license exam and passed. Finally graduated in June 2025.
Challenges have always arisen during the journey of my education but you as an organisation have always given me all the support I needed to become a NURSE, and this motivated me to work harder and make you all proud.. Thank you for everything!
Good news: I have started working already in a hospital as a clinical Director (matron). Already eight months in this role. Hoping to specialise in critical care in the near future."

Student update: Peter Gatluak Francis, Clinical Medicine, Kenya

"I am currently in year 1 semester 2. The total number of years for my study are four. This is what I have been upto this semester; I have been able to engage in independent research, join clubs related to my major and explore specialised electives. This has allowed me to delve deeper into my chosen discipline and discover my specific interests. I have utilised the university resources that are the library and online databases to which I’ve taken advantage of that have enhanced my learning and research capabilities. I have participated in campus events like cultural and music festivals which have enriched my university experience and broaden my horizons.
I joined a study group where its collaborative learning has enhanced my understanding of the course material and provide support during challenging times."

Student update - Ibrahim Sultan Kamara, Clinical Medicine, Sierra Leone

" I’m in my qualifying year in the pursuit of becoming a clinical officer with Bachelor of Science in community health and clinical science. It has been a very busy academic year offering eleven courses most of which has to do with clinical medicine and public health. It has been challenging trying to match up studies, research and presentation and the clinical work. But the clinical work adds to my academic endeavours as I see what I learn in theory in practical.
In December 2024 I was recognised as the best clinician of the year 2024 a recognition I gained from my clinical skills and dedication to save lives in a low resources facility. A recognition which has sparked my true eagerness to becoming a medical Doctor through the endless support of iSTEPup foundation. A foundation which is helping me realised my dream as Medical Doctor and prepare me
for the services of humanity."

Student Aminata Sesay, Nursing, Sierra Leone
" During this first year as a state Registered nurse in trainee, I have had the opportunity to further develop my clinical and theoretical knowledge, which has been both challenging and rewardly. I have been focused on my practical skills in various aspects of Nursing care, including patient assessment, administration of medications, wound care and working closely with experienced medical professionals in clinical settings, which has helped me improve more in my patient care practices, communication skills and how to manage emergency situation and assisting in basic life support.
I have also attended lectures on medical ethics, nursing procedure and patient confidentiality, which have enhance my understanding of the professional and ethical responsibilities of being a nurse.
All modules I have passed successful with a good grade point, now I am in year Two. I am excited to continue improving my nursing skills and deeper my understanding of health care practices and gaining experience in my career. "

"I would like to take this opportunity to announce that I have promoted to year two. I had my exams which commenced on the June 25th and ended on the 4th July 2025. And we are going to be posted for our clinical postings which is laboratory rotation at different hospitals for 8 weeks. I wanted to extend my gratitude to iSTEPup foundation organization for your generosity and support for giving me the opportunity to continue with my studies."

"Motivated by your belief in me, I committed myself fully to my studies. I spent long days and late nights studying, revising, and working hard not just for myself, but also in honor of the faith you placed in me.

I am proud to say that your investment has yielded great results. I emerged as the best nursing student in the entire country, earning a distinction in the national/state board examination, a highly competitive exam taken by students across various nursing institutions in the country. The result, which I have shared in the pictures attached, is a testament to what can be achieved when determination meets opportunity.

I am now serving as an Assistant Lecturer at the same Tonkolili District College of Health Sciences, Masanga, where I once sat as a student. The knowledge I gained here, empowered by your support, is now being passed on to others. From the depths of my heart, I thank you."

Selectiedag nieuwe aanmeldingen / Selection of new applications (English below)

Vandaag hadden we als iSTEPup bestuur een selectiedag om alle aanmeldingen van het afgelopen half jaar te bespreken. De aanmeldingen zijn besproken onder de voorwaarden van iSTEPup. Voor de studenten die vandaag zijn aangenomen, volgt nog een financiële check met het onderwijsinstituut van voorkeur, voordat zij definitief aangenomen worden voor een studiebeurs. Alle studenten hebben inmiddels een reactie ontvangen op hun aanmelding.
Help je een student met zijn/haar aanmelding? Dien je aanmelding vóór 31 oktober in, dan bespreken we dit op de volgende selectiedag! Let op: de aanmeldingsdocumenten zijn onlangs bijgewerkt: de nieuwste versie bevat ook een verklaring over studieschulden die ondertekend moet worden door de onderwijsinstelling als een student al bezig is met een studie. Bekijk onze website voor onze criteria en richtlijnen voor nieuwe aanmeldingen.

Today we had a board meeting with the iSTEPup board, to discuss the new applications. All applications have been reviewed under the terms and conditions of iSTEPup. The next step includes a financial check with the educational institution of choice, before the scholarships are awarded. Students who applied have received an email about our decision.
If you are considering to apply for a scholarship or if you are helping a student with his/her application, please apply before October 31st! Please notice that application documents have been updated: latest version also includes a statement on study debts that should be signed by the preferred educational institution.
