Student Update Charity Mwai Widrom, Clinical Officer, Malawi

"I have written this report to express my gratitude for what you have been doing for me since September, 2024. I am very grateful for it and I am really pleased to have your help. I launched my second year in September, 2024. Second semester of my second year started in February this year, we had a lot of training in this
semester. We did Sexual Transmitted Infection training in our first week, Emergency Training and Triage in second week, Anti-retroviral training in our third week. It was really nice training
as such I gained practical skills of how I can manage emergencies.
After that, I was in my clinical allocations at district hospital for 10 weeks then for psychiatry training for two weeks, I will also do health center management for four weeks and then I’ll have to write end of semester examination."

Student Update: Moses Ben Machaka, Clinical Officer, Malawi

"I was in Kasama General Hospital for the attachments (Junior Clerkship for 4 months). It was a wonderful experience collecting history and examinating patients and having tutorials at some point assisting operations. After our attachments we wrote our examination and I passed, but I wasn't really happy with the results, because I think I could have done better.

During the holiday, my buddy Dr Milou, informed me that she will be in Malawi for Point of care Ultrasound scanning (POCUS) and I was happy to attend to that training it enhances my experience and skills in the treatment of patients. And the time I went back to my workplace, I could do Ultrasound scanning to check for pleural effusion. I've learnt a lot from her visit to Malawi. Attached is a picture together after getting our certificates.
Currently, I am in Zambia preparing to go for our last attachments (Senior Clerkship for 9 months)."

Student update: Chifuniro Kameta, Nursing, Malawi

“In April 2025, I started my 5th semester which means I am remaining with 4 semesters to complete my studies since it is a 4 year program. Last semester was both a learning experience and a period of challenges for me. As a committed student I remained focused and determined to perform well in my studies. It was a theoretical and practical semester and I took part in several clinical areas including community diagnosis, school health, occupational health, family plannig, gyneacology and theatre procedures. These experiences were critical to my training helping me to build skills and knowledge I need to succeed in my profession."

Student update: Fergusson Lemani, Nursing, Malawi

“I successfully completed all courses in both first and second semesters. This has not only deepened my understanding of Nursing and Midwifery but also helped me develop valuable skills such as employing major nursing theories and scientific methods in various activities and encounters as well as understanding better the basics of anatomy and physiology which I believe will help me to easily build on future knowledge that I am yet to acquire during this program. Beyond academics, I have also been involved in various extracurricular activities such as group work, volunteering and various kinds of sports that have enriched my university experience. These experiences have helped me develop important life skills, such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
I look forward to sharing my future progress and achievements with you!"

Graduation update: Nurse Anna Marie Sambou, the Gambia!

"With a heart full of gratitude I write to express my deepest appreciation to the entire organisation of istepup, for a trusting and investing in the education of a girl child. I completed my studies last year April, sat my national license exam and passed. Finally graduated in June 2025.
Challenges have always arisen during the journey of my education but you as an organisation have always given me all the support I needed to become a NURSE, and this motivated me to work harder and make you all proud.. Thank you for everything!
Good news: I have started working already in a hospital as a clinical Director (matron). Already eight months in this role. Hoping to specialise in critical care in the near future."

Student update: Peter Gatluak Francis, Clinical Medicine, Kenya

"I am currently in year 1 semester 2. The total number of years for my study are four. This is what I have been upto this semester; I have been able to engage in independent research, join clubs related to my major and explore specialised electives. This has allowed me to delve deeper into my chosen discipline and discover my specific interests. I have utilised the university resources that are the library and online databases to which I’ve taken advantage of that have enhanced my learning and research capabilities. I have participated in campus events like cultural and music festivals which have enriched my university experience and broaden my horizons.
I joined a study group where its collaborative learning has enhanced my understanding of the course material and provide support during challenging times."

Stichting iSTEPup
