These receptors are involved in chemical reactions that adjust blood pressure, stimulate hormone secretion, trigger release of enzymes, direct the migration of cells in response to chemical stimuli and more. This suggests that essential oils can profoundly influence health when applied or ingested by interacting with olfactory receptors throughout the body.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a liver conditions characterized by fat inside the liver among people who drink little to no alcohol. Over time, these fat deposits can affect liver function and cause liver damage. Although the cause of NAFLD is not fully understood, it has been linked to overweight/obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, high blood pressure, high fats (particularly triglycerides) in the blood, and a high-fat diet. Inhaling sweet orange essential oil protected against NAFLD caused by a high-fat diet in a preclinical model of NAFLD. The oil reduced obesity, high triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and the accumulation of fats in liver cells.

Inhalation of ylang ylang essential oil was compared to music therapy for reducing high blood pressure in elderly people with hypertension. Five drops of ylang ylang essential oil were added to 20 mL of water in a diffuser and diffused four times per week for two weeks. The music therapy group participated in music therapy with sound and MP3 of Java Langgam music four times per week, for two weeks. Blood pressure was taken prior to and immediately following interventions. Both interventions reduced blood pressure during week one, with greater benefits achieved at the end of two weeks. Aromatherapy reduced systolic blood pressure better than music therapy, but music therapy was better for diastolic blood pressure.

Loss of synaptic density is found in many brain disorders and associated with cognitive impairment in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). A preclinical model of AD found that inhalation of lemon essential oil for one hour daily over a period of 30 days reduced cognitive dysfunction and improved memory in subjects with AD. The researchers discovered that inhalation of lemon oil increased synaptic density and reduced acetylcholinesterase activity. The oil also increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor and enhanced synaptic plasticity.
