The importance of direct sunlight and finding indirect sunlight and shade provides much more benefits than reaching for more sunscreen.

Build your body's own photo protection rather than relying on products that encourage artificially long outdoor periods in the sun when you aren't ready for it.

Know when to get into the sun and when to seek shade.

Simple is often best.

Daylight and sunlight followed by darkness and sleep.

Sounds so simple, so easy. The reality is that if we did more if that, we would help reduce the disease burden that is at epidemic proportions across the world.

We have exchanged outdoor lifestyles and whole food with indoor lifestyle's and processed food.

Most people think the first thing is to swap the food. The reality is that if you swap the light environment first, the food changes become easier. You function better, make better choices.

So, for everyone out there. Light before food. Both are important, but light just edges it because light determines what you do with food, how it effects you, it determines what food you choose and even how it is metabolised and stored.

Okay so I'm outside in Drammen, it's 4pm, the sun is low, and everyone inside thinks I'm wasting my time.

They're wrong. UVB? Yeah, it's basically gone or almost gone but there might still be enough if you are light skinned. Fine - but there might also be enough to activate photo protective mechanisms for next time.

There are three other things happenin as well.

One: UVA is still here, and it's releasing nitric oxide from your skin. That's a vasodilator. It lowers blood pressure. Literally while you stand here.

Two: red and near-infrared light is hitting your body right now. These wavelengths go deep. Centimetres into muscle and tissue. They're activating a protein in your mitochondria that runs on photons, cytochrome c oxidase. You're making more ATP. You're reducing inflammation.

Three: the light spectrum at 4pm is exactly the kind your retina uses to fine-tune your circadian clock. Blue light ratio is lowering, red is high. Your brain logs this. It affects when melatonin releases tonight.

You evolved next to a star. Your mitochondria know it. Go outside.
