What really happens when you tense and release your muscles in yoga?

When you hold and then let go of muscle tension during an asana, your nervous system gets a clear signal: it’s safe to relax.

The body learns the difference between effort and ease. With each exhale, the muscles soften, heart rate slows, and the brain releases calming signals.

The same thing happens in meditation. When a distracting thought appears and you let it go, your mind is doing what the body just practiced — releasing tension, returning to balance.

It’s a simple training in awareness: effort, release, and peace in between.

That means less stress, steadier heart and breathing, better sleep, stronger immunity, and a calmer mind — all proven by science.

Learn yoga, get in shape and help underprivileged people in India

My name is Trond Thorrud and I have been studying yoga since 2011. In 2018 I was RYS certified as a yoga teacher at the Sattva Yoga Academy in Rishikesh, India. I teach the classical yoga, Hatha yoga. Yoga is very beneficial especially for those who spend their whole day in a chair working on their laptop. Office workers might experience pain in the back, neck or other areas from sitting too long time in awkward positions. I focus on balancing out these tensions and pains by stretching and breathing, as well as strengthening the core mussels. Yoga is also very beneficial for the brain. I teach how to focus, and through the practice of concentrating on the body, the mussels and the breath, we strengthen the brain.

I give 20% of the revenue to Bija Organization. That means that if you do yoga with me, you are at the same time helping poor families in India. Bija Organization was founded by me in 2015. It is fighting poverty and climate change with sustainable solutions. At the moment, we are giving underprivileged families an innovating tool to produce their own pesticides free food.
