When we grow up we learn from our environment, we copy, listen, absorb, observe, adapt to the world we were born in. Some things we have learned are helpful, whilst others are not. Some things we have learned stand in the way to be fully alive today. Growing as an adult often means unlearning who you think you are; substracting, as opposed to adding to yourself. Growing down, back to your roots, landing, to who you are. To learn who you are, you have to learn who you are not. To do this, it's very helpful to have an external set of eyes, who can see things that you have become blind to. This is where therapy can be very helpful

But how, practically, does one love oneself? Is it a bubble bath, a glass of wine and buying flowers for yourself? Allowing yourself treats, like a pet? I personally learned to do it by looking at all my habits, together with a good therapist. Asking myself which habits caused me stress, uncomfortable feelings of any kind. For example: Before in my life, I was late a lot. I thought this was 'just how I was', going with the flow, relaxed, chill. At closer inspection it turned out it made me lie (make up excuses), feel shame, guilt, not deserving, stressed out by hurrying, missing out on things. I felt entitled, disconnected from others, lonely.. When I realised this I decided to give myself the gift of 'not re-creating those feelings', only for one day: I tried out coming 5 minutes early to everything as an experiment. It felt good. It felt like self love
