World Health Day 2026 | Together for Health – Stand with Science

On 7th April 2026, Luke International was proud to attend the World Health Day commemoration hosted at the Ministry of Health Headquarters in Malawi. The event brought together key health stakeholders under this year's theme, "Together for Health, Stand with Science," with remarks from WHO Resident Representative Dr. Charles Kuria Njuguna and Principal Secretary Mr. Benson Chisamile, representing the Minister of Health.

Discussions centred on strengthening disease surveillance through the One Health Surveillance Platform (OHSP), expanding event-based surveillance at all levels, and harnessing digital health innovation to build more resilient health systems. Speakers also called on African governments to increase investment in science and innovation — a call LIN wholeheartedly supports.

LIN is proud to contribute to this vision through our active role in developing the OHSP and the underpinning digital infrastructure to bridge systems, strengthen interoperability, and ensure that data can move where it is needed most. We remain committed to building the health systems of tomorrow, needed today, together.

Empowered Households, Inspired Communities

Luke International’s mission is to restore human health and dignity through sustainable interventions. A key initiative in achieving this goal is the Pig Farming Project in Malidade Extension Planning Area (EPA). This project employs a pass-on model, where each beneficiary farmer receives three piglets (two sows and one boar). Once the pigs reproduce, farmers return a portion to the project, ensuring sustainability and enabling the expansion to new beneficiaries.

Currently, LIN works with 20 farmers and households through this initiative, with projections indicating the number could double, triple, or even quadruple in the coming years. What began with just 15 piglets has now grown to over 55 in under two years, demonstrating rapid and scalable impact. This success not only improves livelihoods but also fosters a ripple effect of inspiration throughout the community.

By combining economic empowerment with sustainable practices, the project strengthens both household resilience and community dignity, aligning with LIN’s broader vision for transformative change

Empowering Youth, Shaping Futures

LIN firmly believes in the transformative potential of young people as key drivers of sustainable development. Regardless of formal education attainment or not, every individual has the capacity to contribute to meaningful change and progress. To this end, LIN actively engages youth in various initiatives, empowering them to become catalysts for national development.

One such initiative is LIN’s Technical Skills Project, which equips out-of-school youth with practical skills in welding and carpentry. Beyond vocational training, the program fosters a spirit of community service by encouraging participants to give back. Trainees apply their skills by producing essential items, such as school desks, which are donated to under-resourced institutions.

Operating on a tuition-free model, LIN’s Technical Skills Centre has a dual mission: empowering youth while enhancing educational infrastructure. To date, LIN and its trainees have manufactured and donated over 200 desks to primary schools, including Mbalachanda, Kam’banga, and Kavitengo, directly improving learning environments for students.

Through these efforts, LIN not only builds skills but also cultivates a generation committed to growth, innovation, and social responsibility.

Advancing Health and Dignity Through Sustainable Water Solutions

The United Nations recognize access to clean, safe and affordable water as a fundamental human right. However, an estimated 2.2 million people in Malawi still lack access to safe and clean water, with the majority residing in rural areas where over 30% of the population faces this challenge.

In the absence of reliable water sources, many communities depend on hand-dug scoop wells, which pose significant health risks due to contamination. This issue is further exacerbated by the fact that 6% of Malawi’s population continues to practice open defecation, increasing the prevalence of waterborne diseases.

Addressing this crisis is essential to safeguarding public health and ensuring sustainable development. At Luke International, we are committed to turning our mission—"restoring human's health and dignity"—into tangible action. Through our dedication to improving lives and empowering communities, we have brought transformative change to Nkhaniyawo Village in Kamuoli-Mzimba North.

For the first time, residents now have consistent access to safe, protected water—thanks to an innovative solar-powered system that pumps clean groundwater. This milestone not only safeguards health but also upholds their fundamental right to clean water, marking a new chapter in their lives.

By aligning our actions with our mission, we continue to drive sustainable impact, one community at a time.

Technical Skills Project
When formal education falls short, many individuals lose hope for a brighter future. At Luke International, we recognize that everyone possesses untapped potential—regardless of their educational setbacks. Through our technical skills programs, we have invested in over 40 out-of-school youths, empowering them with practical expertise. These young beneficiaries have already made a tangible impact in their communities by producing desks for under-resourced primary schools. Some have even received additional tools to establish their own workshops, paving the way for self-sufficiency and future employment opportunities for others. Youth are the leaders of today, and when given the right support, they have the power to redefine their futures and transform their communities
Meet Regina, one of our Technical Skills graduate who is among five beneficiaries that received tools for individual workshops.

Career Guidance and Motivation Talk
The right information at the right time is more than just a stitch in time—it is a clear window into the future, offering the vision needed to make life-changing decisions. This is the transformative power of motivation and career guidance talks: they illuminate paths, ignite ambition, and empower students to shape their destinies with confidence.
2025 outgoing students at Euthini secondary school are no longer the same. They have been empowered, challenged and motivated.
