Empowered Households, Inspired Communities

Luke International’s mission is to restore human health and dignity through sustainable interventions. A key initiative in achieving this goal is the Pig Farming Project in Malidade Extension Planning Area (EPA). This project employs a pass-on model, where each beneficiary farmer receives three piglets (two sows and one boar). Once the pigs reproduce, farmers return a portion to the project, ensuring sustainability and enabling the expansion to new beneficiaries.

Currently, LIN works with 20 farmers and households through this initiative, with projections indicating the number could double, triple, or even quadruple in the coming years. What began with just 15 piglets has now grown to over 55 in under two years, demonstrating rapid and scalable impact. This success not only improves livelihoods but also fosters a ripple effect of inspiration throughout the community.

By combining economic empowerment with sustainable practices, the project strengthens both household resilience and community dignity, aligning with LIN’s broader vision for transformative change

Empowering Youth, Shaping Futures

LIN firmly believes in the transformative potential of young people as key drivers of sustainable development. Regardless of formal education attainment or not, every individual has the capacity to contribute to meaningful change and progress. To this end, LIN actively engages youth in various initiatives, empowering them to become catalysts for national development.

One such initiative is LIN’s Technical Skills Project, which equips out-of-school youth with practical skills in welding and carpentry. Beyond vocational training, the program fosters a spirit of community service by encouraging participants to give back. Trainees apply their skills by producing essential items, such as school desks, which are donated to under-resourced institutions.

Operating on a tuition-free model, LIN’s Technical Skills Centre has a dual mission: empowering youth while enhancing educational infrastructure. To date, LIN and its trainees have manufactured and donated over 200 desks to primary schools, including Mbalachanda, Kam’banga, and Kavitengo, directly improving learning environments for students.

Through these efforts, LIN not only builds skills but also cultivates a generation committed to growth, innovation, and social responsibility.

Advancing Health and Dignity Through Sustainable Water Solutions

The United Nations recognize access to clean, safe and affordable water as a fundamental human right. However, an estimated 2.2 million people in Malawi still lack access to safe and clean water, with the majority residing in rural areas where over 30% of the population faces this challenge.

In the absence of reliable water sources, many communities depend on hand-dug scoop wells, which pose significant health risks due to contamination. This issue is further exacerbated by the fact that 6% of Malawi’s population continues to practice open defecation, increasing the prevalence of waterborne diseases.

Addressing this crisis is essential to safeguarding public health and ensuring sustainable development. At Luke International, we are committed to turning our mission—"restoring human's health and dignity"—into tangible action. Through our dedication to improving lives and empowering communities, we have brought transformative change to Nkhaniyawo Village in Kamuoli-Mzimba North.

For the first time, residents now have consistent access to safe, protected water—thanks to an innovative solar-powered system that pumps clean groundwater. This milestone not only safeguards health but also upholds their fundamental right to clean water, marking a new chapter in their lives.

By aligning our actions with our mission, we continue to drive sustainable impact, one community at a time.

Technical Skills Project
When formal education falls short, many individuals lose hope for a brighter future. At Luke International, we recognize that everyone possesses untapped potential—regardless of their educational setbacks. Through our technical skills programs, we have invested in over 40 out-of-school youths, empowering them with practical expertise. These young beneficiaries have already made a tangible impact in their communities by producing desks for under-resourced primary schools. Some have even received additional tools to establish their own workshops, paving the way for self-sufficiency and future employment opportunities for others. Youth are the leaders of today, and when given the right support, they have the power to redefine their futures and transform their communities
Meet Regina, one of our Technical Skills graduate who is among five beneficiaries that received tools for individual workshops.

Career Guidance and Motivation Talk
The right information at the right time is more than just a stitch in time—it is a clear window into the future, offering the vision needed to make life-changing decisions. This is the transformative power of motivation and career guidance talks: they illuminate paths, ignite ambition, and empower students to shape their destinies with confidence.
2025 outgoing students at Euthini secondary school are no longer the same. They have been empowered, challenged and motivated.

2025, New Beginnings – LIN’s Commitment to Malawi in 2025

Dear Friends and Supporters. As we step into 2025, we do so with both reflection and resolve. The world of global health faces uncertainties and challenges, but at LIN, our commitment to strengthening health and development in Malawi remains unwavering. Your support continues to be the backbone of our work, and together, we push forward.

We have some important updates to share. First, our Head Office in Norway has moved to a new location in Oslo, marking a fresh chapter for our team (https://lukeinternational.no/head-office/).

Additionally, our longtime Administrator and former Managing Director, Mr. Hans-Tore Leithe, is retiring after over 15 years of dedicated service. His leadership and passion have shaped LIN’s work from the beginning, and we are deeply grateful for his contributions. He remains engaged with LIN’s work, as a current Board Member and Member of the organization.

At the same time, we are excited to welcome our new Administrator, Mr. Jørn Lemvik.

We we will be organising our third General Assembly this year. A new Board will be elected during the General Assesmbly. Together with the newly appointed Board in Malawi, and the new Board to come in Norway we are ready to put our strength and our commitment into the work improving the livelyhood conditions for all.

Thank you for standing with us. We look forward to sharing more updates and continuing this important journey together.

The latest edition of the LIN newsletter has been published. Read about the geo-enabling health initiatives in Malawi!

Health is a multi-dimensional concern that extends beyond human health to include animal and environmental health. It’s not just about time—geography plays a crucial role in the health sector, serving as a unifying dimension that connects various aspects of health data and service delivery. Traditional tools like tables and graphs often fall short in visualizing complex interactions between these dimensions. This is where Geographic Information Systems (GIS) comes into play. Recognizing the importance of GIS, Luke International (LIN) has spearheaded training initiatives aimed at enhancing health professionals’ GIS skills in disease surveillance and geo-microplanning.

Education Sponsorship Program: Congratulations!!!

This month its all about education, we are celebrating our beneficiaries who have made it to various universities in Malawi.
Ladies and gentlemen, meet Eugine Kayange and Vestina Nyirongo both from Katoto Secondary school who have been selected to study Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Bachelor of Arts in International relations and diplomacy at Mzuzu University respectively.
In their words, the Luke International scholarship has enabled their dream to go to university as it enabled them to fully concentrate on their studies with no more worries of being kicked out of school due to unpaid school fees. Eugine and Vestina are among the 5 students under the Luke International scholarship selected into various universities.
in chichewa there is a proverb that says " Lende nkukankhana" thus we can both succeed by pushing each other. we truly need each other to reach our goals.

Education Sponsorship Program: All the best to our Outgoing students.

Luke International under the Education Sponsorship Program supports needy students with tuition, accommodation, meals and other materials as needed in its quest to promote equal access to education by breaking the financial barrier.

In the 2023/2024 acedemic year, LIN is supporting 69 students, out of which 68 will sit for the Malawi School Certificate of Education (M.S.C.E). We are excited to see our students reaching this far, with all the years of preparation, discipline and dedication. All the best to our 68 champions, University awaits!!
LIN has over the years supported over 300 students at both tertiary and secondary levels some of whom have gone to take up different roles in society.

As a tibetan proverb says: A child without education is like a bird without wings". Our support to students will enable them to soar high and reach greater heights. As it is said " education is the passport to the future"
