Gary Woodland didn't become an elite golfer just because he played multiple sports, but a background in baseball and basketball likely helped develop athletic capabilities which have benefited him in golf.
Golfers who early specialize generally increase their risk of overuse injuries and burnout while limiting their exposure to activities which can help promote more explosive and diverse movement skills.
Despite the multitude of star golfers with a multisport background that are excelling on professional tours, there will always be young golfers (and parents) who choose to early specialize. Though we don't believe this is optimal, we are certain that it elevates the need for qualified coaches, fitness professionals and medical providers who are able to assess and develop a young golfer's physical tools. This is why a primary focus of our advanced Junior seminars is outlining how to evaluate, train and coach young golfers regardless of age, physical maturity or athletic background.
