Most people don’t realize it, but tiny creatures called eye mites live on human skin, especially around the eyelashes and eyelids. These mites are known as Demodex, and almost every adult has them.
They are so small that they can’t be seen without a microscope, and in most cases, they cause no harm at all.
Eye mites live inside hair follicles and oil glands near the eyes. They feed on natural skin oils and waste skin cells, which is actually part of how they survive.
These mites are more active at night, which is why some people may notice itchy or irritated eyes in the morning. While they move and feed during sleep, they also leave waste behind inside the follicles.
For most people, this is completely normal and harmless. The body’s immune system keeps the mite population under control, so there are no symptoms. Problems only begin when the number of mites becomes too high. This condition is called Demodex overgrowth.
When too many mites are present, people may experience symptoms like itchy eyelids, redness, burning, crusty lashes, or a gritty feeling in the eyes, especially after waking up. Poor eyelid hygiene, weakened immunity, aging, or certain skin conditions can increase the risk.
The good news is that eye mite problems are treatable. Doctors often recommend gentle eyelid cleaning, medicated wipes, or specific treatments to reduce mite numbers. Keeping the eye area clean and avoiding heavy makeup can also help.
In short, eye mites are a natural part of human skin, and most people live with them without ever knowing. They only become an issue when balance is lost, reminding us how important simple hygiene and care can be.
