Our commitment to restoring sight continues beyond borders with the Outreach Micro Surgical Eye Camp at Kampong Chhnang Province of Cambodia from 19-25 June 2025. Dr. Reeta Gurung, CEO, Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, Dr. Shyam Vyas, and 5 other members of the Nepal Eye Program, Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, traveled to serve communities in Cambodia. A total of 357 Surgeries were performed, including 37 Pterygium cases. The camp was supported by the Water and Healthcare Foundation (WAH). NEP-TIO, in collaboration with the WAH, has been working since 2019 to eliminate preventable blindness in Kampong Chhnang Province, Cambodia. In 2025, the two organizations renewed their partnership and achieved a historic milestone—performing a huge number of surgeries, the highest number in their campaign so far.

From 13–15 June 2025, a team from the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology (TIO), led by Dr. Sanduk Ruit, successfully performed 402 cataract surgeries during an Outreach Microsurgical Eye Clinic (OMEC) held at Pullahari Monastery, Kapan. This marked the 36th eye clinic hosted at the monastery by TIO, a continuation of a longstanding commitment to accessible eye care through continued collaboration.

Ahead of the OMEC, TIO’s technical team conducted extensive screening camps across Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kavre, and Dhading districts, identifying individuals living with cataract blindness.

TIO extends its sincere gratitude to Ananda Sangh for their continued partnership and to other trusted partners, including volunteers from Nepal Scouts, for their dedicated support throughout the outreach.

ABOUT US

Nepal Eye Program was officially launched in July 1992 to support the prevention & control of blindness in Nepal and the region. Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology (TIO) is the implementing body of the Nepal Eye Program, a not-for-profit, community-based organization. With an aim to act as a model for treatment, research and training, one of the active members of Apex Body for eye health, Ministry of Health (MoH), Nepal and working in co-operation with all other eye care centers in Nepal. The TIO facility was opened in 1994.

In the early years, working with The Fred Hollows Foundation (FHF), Australia, TIO played a key role to help refine and adapt a practical, safe, and affordable technique of intraocular lens implant for cataract surgery in developing countries. Another key achievement in the early days was the establishment of the country’s first eye bank, in conjunction with Tissue Banks International in Baltimore, USA, and Lions International.

Another vital international association of TIO early on was with the Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP), USA. They helped to run unique projects empowering local physicians to alleviate the suffering caused by blindness, including skills-transfer education, cost-recovery, research, and the creation of a network of eye care facilities.

With the establishment of the state of the art manufacturing facility for intraocular lenses funded, designed & constructed by FHF, TIO had started off considerably well equipped in its journey towards blindness prevention and eye care. After fourteen years, TIO is still determined in its mission to be the hub for ophthalmic services, academia and research. The current focus of TIO is on strengthening its academic unit, opening more rural community eye centres in the hilly and mountainous districts of Nepal and above all sharing the ‘Tilganga’ model of eye care concept to others.
