Kwati
Kwati is a traditional Newari soup from Nepal, typically consumed during the festival of Janai Purnima and Rakshya Bandan. This hearty and nutritious dish is made from a mixture of nine different types of sprouted beans, known as "navadhanya" in Sanskrit, which include black gram, green gram, chickpeas, soybeans, peas, cowpeas, horse gram, mung beans, and rice beans.

Cultural and Nutritional Significance

1. Health Benefits:
Kwati is highly valued for its health benefits. It is rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals, making it a nourishing food, especially important during the monsoon season when the risk of infections is higher. The sprouted beans in Kwati are easier to digest and help boost immunity, making it an excellent dish for revitalization.

2. Ritual Importance:
Kwati is traditionally prepared and consumed on the day of Janai Purnima, also known as Raksha Bandhan in other parts of Nepal and India. On this day, people, particularly those of Newari culture, believe that eating Kwati helps to purify the body and provide the strength needed to face the rainy season. It's also associated with the agricultural cycle, as it's prepared from fresh beans harvested during this time.

3. Cultural Connection:
For the Newar community, Kwati is more than just a dish; it's a connection to their cultural heritage. The act of preparing and eating Kwati during Janai Purnima reinforces communal bonds and traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Kwati, therefore, is not just a seasonal delicacy but a significant cultural and health-related practice in Nepalese tradition, particularly within the Newar community.
