Uveitis
Uveitis is inflammation of the uveal tract [iris, ciliary body, choroid]. It can affect the front, middle, or back of the eye. Early detection is essential because untreated inflammation can lead to glaucoma, cataract, or permanent vision loss.
Causes
• Autoimmune disorders like HLA B27 related disease or sarcoidosis.
• Infections such as TB, syphilis, toxoplasmosis, or viral conditions.
• Trauma or post surgical inflammation.
• Idiopathic cases, where no clear cause is identified.
Signs and Symptoms
• Eye pain, redness, and photophobia.
• Blurred vision or floaters.
• Circumcorneal congestion.
• Anterior chamber cells and flare, keratic precipitates, or hypopyon in severe inflammation.
• Possible complications like posterior synechiae or raised intraocular pressure.
Management
• Prompt evaluation to identify the underlying cause.
• Topical corticosteroids for anterior involvement, with careful monitoring.
• Cycloplegic drops to relieve pain and prevent synechiae.
• Systemic steroids or immunosuppressive therapy in severe or posterior cases.
• Specific antimicrobial therapy for infectious etiologies.
• Regular follow up to monitor optic nerve, macula, and intraocular pressure.
