Jihad as heard by us many times holds a very deep meaning. Most of the times, it’s commonly stereotyped with one of it’s types as “religious war”. However, one must understand that it does entail numerous types and subtypes. Additionally, some of those are compulsory upon us all to indulge in, some are highly recommended while some are exempted from us provided some communities out of the Ummah is involved into. Since, this page is related to counselling, let’s just focus on 2 of those which are; Jihad An-Nafs and Jihad As-Shaitan. And these 2 types are compulsory upon us all.
Jihad An-Nafs:
It’s striving with one’s ‘self’. ‘Self’ is a very broad term to define outwardly however let’s break it into 4 other subtypes to grasp their meaning clearly.
1. Striving to learn the teachings of Islam. Gaining knowledge is Fard upon all Muslims as told by Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Some may not be directly approachable to authentic sources while some of us wouldn’t like to transform ourselves just because things go against our values/cultures. Remember, Allah rewards for your struggle that you put into learning and practicing.
2. Striving to act upon what one has learned. It’s in simple terms people behave by “Knowing without acting”. Allah said in the Qur’an to perform what we preach. Also, it’s of mere importance to show in our actions of whatever we have learnt throughout. What’s the point of learning if one has not put into practice of what he has learnt?
3. Striving to give Dawah. As said by Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam in an authentic Hadith, “Convey from me even it’s just an Ayah of the Qur’an”. We must understand how blessed this work is. If you don’t preach of what you know, it will be like you trying to conceal things which people have been given as birth rights by Allah, i.e., to hear the teachings of Islam.
4. Striving to bear trials and tribulations patiently. It’s more than difficult to observe than just to say by mouth. By the help of Allah, one may practice persevering both in terms of trials or tribulations showered directly by Allah or by Allah because of what we tried to preach people and they harshly attacked or jokingly criticized.
Jihad As-Shaitan:
It’s striving against Shaitan. Again, this may be of 2 types.
1. Warding off the doubts that Shaitan brings to our minds in goal of weakening our faith. Remember, his ultimate goal is to deceive us from Allah and his straight path. In order to do so, he plays beautiful tricks on us per se, logics, explanations, examples and so forth. However, we gotta strongly hold the rope of Allah by seeking refuge from Him and trying from our inner self not to get intimidated by Shaitan’s whispers.
2. Striving against Shaitan of what desires he puts onto our hearts. This is the most difficult to strive with. Because a lot of the things are easily present around us that it seems normal to us which in fact is haram. Meanwhile, sometimes Shaitan uses his weird trick of coming to whisper into ears gradually. We must be self-aware about those things and try hard to free ourselves from devilish thinking.
