Otomycosis is a fungal infection of the external ear canal, commonly caused by fungi such as Aspergillus and Candida species. It often occurs in warm, humid environments and is more common among people who swim frequently, use antibiotic ear drops, or clean their ears excessively, which can disrupt the natural protective barriers. The condition presents with symptoms like itching, ear pain, a feeling of fullness, hearing loss, and a thick discharge that may be white, yellow, green, or black. Diagnosis is typically made through physical examination using an otoscope, and sometimes a sample of the discharge is tested to identify the fungus. Treatment involves thoroughly cleaning the ear canal and applying antifungal ear drops such as clotrimazole or miconazole. In severe cases, oral antifungal medications may be prescribed.
