Geta Eye Hospital is a non-profit service oriented hospital responsible for comprehensive eye care in Far western development region of Nepal. It was established in 1981 with the support from Norwegian Agency for Development (NORAD). It is affiliated to Nepal NetraJyoti Sangh (NNJS), a non-profit social organization responsible for comprehensive eye care in Nepal. The hospital is centrally located in the forest of Geta village midway between the major road system and the airport. It is 12 kilometres from Dhangadhi city and 4 kilometres from Dhangadhi airport. The hospital is equipped with modern equipments and is one of the best surgical centers in Nepal. Besides far western region of Nepal, patients even from Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand visit the hospital for quality eye care services. The hospital is also involved in training of ophthalmic human resource of various capacity. Started as a 100 bedded eye hospital in 1981 it has grown to be a 350 bedded eye hospital with 3 surgical eye care centres and 6 primary eye care centres located in different districts of far west Nepal. The hospital organizes free surgical eye camps, diagnostic, screening and treatment (DST) eye camps and school screening every year to make eye care services accessible to people from remote corners of Far western Nepal. It organizes . Surgical Eye Camps: The hospital organizes 1 to 3 days surgical eye camps in remote areas of the region to provide medical and surgical eye care service free of cost. These camps are financially supported by different organizations. Most of the patients operated in such camps are from poor socioeconomic background and some of them are found to be living with bilateral blindness since several years. The hospital organized 44 surgical eye camps and performed free surgery in 4978 eyes in 2011. Diagnostic Screening and Treatment (DST) Camps: The hospital organizes one day DST camps in areas with transportation facilities so that screened patients can come on their own to the hospital for free surgery. However, trachomatous trichiasis (TT) surgery is performed at the camp site on the same day. The hospital organized 20 DST camps and screened 9152 patients in 2011. Among them 2174 patients received free surgery at Geta Eye Hosptial. School Screening: School screening is a regular outreach activity at Geta Eye Hospital and primary eye care centres. Altogether 31397 students from 97 schools were screened and 790 received spectacle free of cost in 2011.
