Getting uninterrupted sleep with a newborn is not a realistic goal, but ensuring they have a safe sleep environment where everyone gets some rest is achievable!

Research from around the world was evaluated to determine sleeping practices that help keep infants safe.

The top 3 factors were:
🌟 Laying the baby on their back to sleep.
🌟 Practicing bed sharing where the infant has a designated place for him/herself, that is free of loose blankets, pillows, and other objects.
🌟 Rooming-in with the mom to facilitate easy breastfeeding, which keeps the mom more tuned into the babies' rhythms like breathing, movements, and crying.

Can you spot the differences?
Safe sleep is a big deal!
Newborns can't roll and sometimes forget to breathe, so it is very important to ensure they have a safe place to sleep.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that newborns sleep on their backs, on a firm surface, free of objects that could cover their face, and in a designated place just for them to use. They also recommend breastfeeding to prevent SIDS and SUIDS! To learn more, check out https://www.aap.org/en/patient-care/safe-sleep/?srsltid=AfmBOoquXU4prXeV_rkCvSR-72zcsK5gBB-kY2FbvOCe89M1QRB4hcxB

Mastitis is an infection of the breast tissue (usually only on one side) BUT it is not contagious! It is important to keep breastfeeding or at least taking milk out as normal (every 2 to 3 hours). Sometimes just hygienic and regular breastfeeding help you get past the trouble, and sometimes you need to take an antibiotic to help you get better quickly (don't worry, you can usually keep breastfeeding while taking antibiotics) just check with your doctor first.

Jaundice is a common condition in newborns that usually resolves in about a week's time. It occurs when there is a buildup of bilirubin in the baby's blood. To help an infant reduce bilirubin amounts, they need frequent feedings (8 to 12 feedings in 24 hours) so that they can get rid of the bilirubin (by 💩)! Sunlight can also help their bodies to break down the bilirubin to make it easier for them to move it out of their body. When exposing an infant to sunlight, do it during the less intense hours of the day, between 8am to 10am. Make sure their skin is exposed (diaper only) and only do 20 minutes unless otherwise advised by a medical professional.

This week we are talking about tongue ties.
Have you ever heard a consistent clicking sound while breastfeeding?
Have you noticed a pale stretched piece of tissue under your baby's tongue when they are crying?
Maybe, your baby seems to have a lot of gas and reflux trouble?
These are all possible indicators for a tongue tie.
Dr. Ghaheri does a fabulous job at explaining tongue ties, so I have shared one of his videos here. Be sure to check out more of his content, or contact us, if you would like to learn more about tongue ties.

Have you heard of the term, liquid gold? In the lactation world, we are referring to the first milk or colostrum that develops before the baby is born. That's right, moms start making this protein-rich, golden colored, thick milk around 16 weeks, so that it is ready whenever the baby comes.

Barbie is helping me show families how to burp their babies. It may take several minutes, and you may need to change positions to get your little one to burp. Burping is helpful as it reduces pressure in the stomach which reduces discomfort and spitting up. Make sure that whatever position you use, you support the baby's head and keep their airway open for easy breathing.
