Our Story

Nepal is a developing country having a lot of problems among them health is one. One of the problems regarding the health is oral health. Oral disease qualifies as major public health problems owing to their higher prevalence and significant social impact . Oral health is considered as fundamental to general health and well-being. A healthy mouth enables an individual to speak, eat and socialize without experiencing any active disease, discomfort or embarrassment Oral health knowledge is considered to be an essential prerequisite for health related behavior WHO has defined the oral health as “A standard of the oral and related issues which enables an individual to eat, speak and socialize without active diseases, discomfort or embarrassment and which continues to general well being”. Oral hygiene is the practice of keeping the mouth and teeth clean to prevent dental problems and bad breath. A tooth cleaning is removal of dental plaque and tartar from teeth to prevent cavities, gingivitis, and gum diseases. Severe gum disease causes at least one third of adult tooth loss. Tooth decay is most common global disease affecting every family . According to oral health facts (WHO), the most common oral diseases are dental cavities and periodontal (gum) disease. Oral health is a worldwide-unrealized problem and is most common in the developing country. Poor oral health and untreated oral diseases and condition can have significant impact on the quality of life. In developing countries like Nepal, oral diseases are most common problems due to lack of education and poverty. The most common dental problem of Nepalese is caries and gum diseases. In a developing country like Nepal, oral diseases are one of the common problems of health due to lack of education and awareness. More than 75% of the population is deprived of oral health services and education. Ever since 2003 A.D, it has achieved lots of faith and support from the people. A decade of service and dedication has been beneficial to both the service providers as well as service receivers. The past review gives us a clear picture of what we have achieved for ourselves, communities and stakeholders. There have been numerous obstacles on our way to achieve our dreams but with strong organizational structure and management, we have been able to contribute to the community and the nation. Conducting camps and clinics, extending areas and services has not merely our aim of institutional promotion but we have aimed for Quality Oral Health for all. The new building of Himal dental hospital and institute of dental sciences would be the largest of all providing the sophisticated services in oral health. The area of services will be extended and the building will have spacious as well as patient friendly environment. Prevention, care and treatment of dental diseases are accepted as equally important as caring for other vital organs of the human body. Himal Dental Hospital is hence established to commit to quality oral health for all. It was established in August 2003 It is the Pioneer Dental Hospital in Kathmandu valley providing services since a decade. It is equipped with latest dental equipments for prevention, care and treatment of oral health. Himal Dental Hospital is not only committed to provide services through hospitals and clinics but also committed to accessibility, availability and affordability of services to community. Hence, to provide the dental services to mass and to reach the unreached HDH has been conducting various free community dental camps, free mobile dental camps and school health checkup programs. HIMAL DENTAL HOSPITAL’S ACHIVEMENTS SPECIAL FEATURES OF THIS HOSPITAL DEPARTMENT OF ORTHODONTICS The Department of Orthodontics is the area of dentistry conerned with the supervision, guidance and correction of the growing and mature dentofacial structures, including those conditions that require movement of teeth or correction of mal-relationships and malformations of related structures by the adjustment of the relationships between and among teeth and facial bones by the application of forces and/or the stimulation and redirection of the functional forces within the craniofacial complex. The ultimate aim of Orthodontic treatment is to achieve functional efficiency, structural balance and esthetic harmony of face and the dentofacial structures. Presently, various treatment procedures such as: fixed orthodontics, removable orthodontics, dentofacial orthopedics procedures are being carried out. DEPARTMENT OF ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY Minor Oral Surgical procedures such as teeth extraction, removal of impacted teeth, cyst enucleation, biopsies etc are routinely carried out in this department DEPARTMENT OF PROSTHODONTICS This department provides new artificial tooth for those persons who lose their teeth. This Department carried out replacement of missing teeth. Complete dentures, removable partial dentures, fixed bridges and maxillofacial prosthesis of congenital defects resultant of carcinoma & trauma are routinely fabricated in this department DEPARTMENT OF PEDODONTICS & PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY A separate branch is devoted to the needs of children. The importance of child's dentition is explained to parents and necessary procedures are carried out in restoring them. Procedures like (a) Amalgam Restorations (b) Glass Inomer Restorations (c) Anterior & Posterior Composite Restoration are routinely done. Procedures like: (a) Pulpotomy (b) Removable Orthodontic Therapy (c) Serial extractions (d) Pulpectomy are carried out on child patients at present. Management of handicapped patients is also being done. With respect to preventive Dentistry –school health programme has been scheduled / recommended from the public health dept. DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY DENTISTRY This department is involved in the community based academic & clinical activities. Research & Oral Health Awareness Programme also are carrying out from the department. This department has its own importance, as the curriculum of BDS is community oriented. This department is conducting dental camps, school health programmes, Mother-child dental health awareness programes etc. individually according to the plan of action in accordance with the academic curriculum of CDS programme. Initially, the role-played by the Community Dental Service was mostly at a curative level, gradually, department started to consider the aspects of prevention methods, health promotion and health education as well as community activities. DEPARTMENT OF PERIODONTICS The department of Periodontics deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases and conditions of gums, periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone which are very important parts of oral health. Oral prophylaxis/scaling, polishing and periodontal surgeries are carried out in this dept. It consists of ultra-modern ultrasonic scalers. DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY & ENDODONTICS All types of restorative dentistry as well as Endodontic treatments are carried out in this department. Cosmetic dentistry works carried out in this department is gaining popularity in the recent times. . Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology To cure any disease it is important to provide correct diagnosis. The hospital’s OPD department is equipped with modern technology machines which include: 1. Intra-Oral Cameras 2. Ortho Pantomograms 3. General IOPA X-ray Department of Conservative and Endodontic Surgery Decay is a wide spreading disease that does not leave any individual. At conservative department, HDH provides restorative treatment on almost all surfaces of the teeth using flowable composites and other dental materials. Department of Prosthodontia Including Crown and Bridge Prostho department are engaged in providing solution for the patients who have lost their teeth prematurely due to negligence or some other reasons. HDH care for senior citizens at fabricating complete dentures for old patients. Department of Periodontics This department specializes in the treatment related to the structures, which supports the tooth. The highlight of the treatment is on how to maintain oral hygiene and with the reconstruction of supporting tissues, which are lost due to periodontal diseases. Department of Pedodontics For the development of healthy permanent teeth, it is important to give emphasis in maintenance of deciduous teeth (milk teeth). We offer general dental treatment to primary teeth in order to prevent cavitations and providing preventive treatment for restoring occlusion etc. Department of Orthodontics Our major concern is not only with the correction of the position of teeth but also to provide the correct balance to the occlusion so that it leads to normal oral functioning. Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Oral and maxillofacial surgery involves minor and major surgical procedures, which include removing infections by procedures such as extraction followed by curettage. Major procedures include removing cyst, tumor and providing first aid medical emergency for trauma cases.
