We are pleased to announce that 𝐃𝐫. 𝐀𝐚𝐲𝐮𝐬𝐡 𝐀𝐫𝐲𝐚𝐥, 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐀𝐌𝐒 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥, has successfully completed the prestigious Asia Pacific Spine Society (APSS) Fellowship at the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This fellowship program offered specialized training in complex spinal deformity (especially scoliosis) screening, diagnosis, and treatment, under the mentorship of globally renowned experts in spinal deformities.

𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐥
Following this intensive fellowship at one of the highest-volume scoliosis center’s in the Asia-Pacific region, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐀𝐚𝐲𝐮𝐬𝐡 𝐀𝐫𝐲𝐚𝐥, brings back enhanced expertise in managing Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) and other spinal deformities using evidence-based, patient-specific treatment protocols. These include:

• Early scoliosis detection and diagnosis through systematic clinical and radiological screening
• Use of 3D spinal assessment techniques
• Implementation of conservative care protocols, including custom brace management
• Planning and ex*****on of complex spinal deformity surgeries, focused on alignment, balance, and long-term outcomes
• Patient-centric counselling using visual tools and educational models to aid decision-making

🎗️ June is Scoliosis Awareness Month 🎗️

This month, we stand in support of the people living with scoliosis — a condition that causes an abnormal curvature of the spine, often developing during childhood or adolescence.

Scoliosis can affect more than just posture. It can lead to back pain, breathing difficulties, and emotional challenges. But with early detection, proper monitoring, and the right care, many people go on to live strong, active lives.

💡 Know the signs:
1. Uneven shoulders or hips
2. A visible curve in the spine
3. One shoulder blade more prominent than the other
4. Clothes not fitting evenly

As a spine surgeon, I’m constantly reminded of the strength and resilience of individuals living with scoliosis. This month is dedicated to raising awareness, breaking stigmas, and encouraging early detection.

Let’s use this month to spread knowledge, support those affected, and advocate for better spine health for all.

It gives me immense pleasure to share the publication of our latest Systematic Review titled "A New Classification System for Reporting Complications of Percutaneous Transforaminal Endoscopic Lumbar Decompression" in the Journal of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and Technique (JMISST).

In this paper, we propose a structured and standardized framework to classify and report complications associated with percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic lumbar discectomy/decompression (TELD) — a rapidly evolving 'ultra' minimally invasive technique in spine surgery. Clear, consistent reporting is essential to improving patient outcomes, advancing surgical practice, and fostering transparent research in this growing field.

I’m grateful to my co-authors and collaborators who contributed their expertise to this work, and to the journal for the opportunity to share our research in their Special Issue "Consensus in MISS".

Spinal Injections.

Selective Nerve Root Block / Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injection (TFESI) can help treat nerve pain caused by Lumbar Disc Herniation without the need for Spine Surgery

The use of TFESI (Transforaminal Epidural Steroid injection) in patients with sciatica of 6 weeks-12 months duration is an effective intervention that obviates the requirement for surgical intervention in ~60% of patients.

This intervention may be considered as an initial alternative to surgery in patients with symptomatic posterolateral disc herniations without significant associated neurological deficits.
