The ATHENA trial provided significant insights into cervical cancer screening methods, demonstrating that HPV testing is more effective than Pap smears in detecting high-risk cases. Specifically, the trial found that the cobas® HPV test, which screens for high-risk HPV genotypes, including HPV 16 and 18, was more effective at identifying women at risk for cervical cancer than traditional Pap cytology alone.

One key finding was that nearly 1 in 7 women who tested positive for HPV 16 and had normal Pap results were found to have high-grade cervical disease that the Pap test missed. This led to the recommendation that HPV testing could be used as a primary screening tool, with Pap tests used for follow-up in certain cases. The U.S. FDA approved the cobas® HPV test for first-line primary screening based on these findings, highlighting its ability to detect more cases without significantly increasing unnecessary follow-ups
