Happy International youth Day
Happy . In honour of this year’s theme, “Local Youth Actions for the Sustainable Development Goals and Beyond”, we wanted to highlight the incredible work of Nepal’s Deafblind Youth Network.
For several years, Sense International has been working with Deafblind Associations in Nepal who identify young people with deafblindness, advocate for their inclusion in education, and train them in advocacy and disability rights. Now, these young people are leading change for themselves.
One of those people is Rekha, President of the Deafblind Association Nepal‘s Rupandehi Branch. Rekha’s sight and hearing both began to decline at the age of 11; teachers and classmates didn’t understand her needs and she was shunned from education. Despite setbacks, Rekha was determined to stay connected; she learned Nepali sign language, lip-reading, and continued to teach herself skills through Youtube videos.
Rekha developed confidence as she engaged with the Deafblind Association and disability rights networks. Now she works to lead and represent other young people with deafblindness across national and international platforms, advocating for inclusive policies, whilst running a sewing business and a social media channel.
Rekha’s story is a symbol of the growing leadership among youth with deafblindness in Nepal. With the right support, recognition, and tools, they are not just surviving but leading—and transforming the narrative for the entire deafblind community."
