Postural imbalance on the left and balance on the right. Note how mandible position is strictly related with trunk posture. Hence, Orientation and stabilization are the two subcomponents for body balance.

E.g- If there is an injured part of the body, as in an ankle sprain, the body naturally stabilizes the injured area allowing more movement of other parts of the foot to compensate for the injured area. The same is applicable for the other body parts including TMJ as illustrated in the above picture.

LOCKED JAW

Subluxation or dislocation: If the jaw opens too wide, it can get stuck in the wide open position, which is called an open lock. A patient can rarely come across a closed locked jaw as well.

ANTERIOR DISC DISPLACEMENT WITHOUT REDUCTION

Closed lock: The disc is forward of its normal position and prevents the jaw from fully opening. This is called a closed lock or anterior disc displacement without reduction.

ANTERIOR DISC DISPLACEMENT WITH REDUCTION

Popping or clicking jaw: The disc, which is shown in yellow, is forward or anterior of the jaw condyle. When the jaw is opened, the disc can click or pop, and then the jaw follows its normal opening. Clicking can also occur on closing. When this occurs, it is known as anterior disc displacement with reduction.

NORMAL OPENING:

The disc, which is shown in yellow, is in the proper position, and it glides forward and back when the jaw is opened.
