With the invaluable support of Direct Relief, Mountain Heart Nepal has successfully organized medical camps in the earthquake-affected regions of West Rukum and Jajarkot. Starting from Kathmandu, our journey spanned over two days, leading us to the heart of these needy communities.
The medical camp, which began on December 7, 2023, allowed us to provide medical examinations to over 700 individuals within a week. These health checks, coupled with the distribution of free medications, directly addressed the critical health needs of the local population.
In response to the varied needs of those affected, we also distributed clothing to pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children. This effort was complemented by providing educational books to schoolchildren, who are now attending classes in makeshift open spaces. These books, published with assistance from Chance for Nepal, a UK-registered charity, not only foster a continued interest in education but also offer vital health and hygiene knowledge.
A significant aspect of our relief work involved distributing Disaster Relief buckets, aimed at supporting the most vulnerable groups - the elderly, single women, and individuals with disabilities who were affected by the earthquake. These buckets symbolize hope and resilience for the recipients.
This initiative was in response to the devastating earthquake that hit the western part of Nepal on November 3, 2023. The quake and its subsequent aftershocks, including a significant 5.8 magnitude event on November 6, caused extensive damage to infrastructure and homes. Many partially damaged houses were completely destroyed.
The aftermath of the earthquake has left many in a state of trauma, compounded by the harsh realities of living in temporary shelters. The cold weather further exacerbates their already fragile health conditions. Among the most common ailments we encountered were respiratory illnesses, eye and skin infections, and cases of diarrhoea. Moreover, mental health issues were prevalent, with many individuals struggling with sleeplessness and anxiety.
The chronic patients faced a particularly harrowing dilemma – the need to choose between rebuilding their homes and refilling essential medications. This situation underscored the dire circumstances they were navigating through.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Direct Relief for their unwavering support. Their contribution has enabled us to deliver much-needed assistance to these communities. Our joint efforts have provided medical aid and conveyed a strong message of solidarity, hope, and the importance of education during these challenging times.
