Hope For Handwork
Dhaatu is rooted in Nepali Heritage
Rooted in Nepali heritage, shaped by ancient wisdom and adapted to modern sensibilities Dhaatu creates a line of products celebrating simple and mindful living. Dhaatu envisions to revive traditions from where it originated centuries ago and those that have immense utility in our day to day lives. Through our handcrafted pieces we strive to kee
p alive this ancestral art of metal crafting of Nepal. Undoubtedly Dhaatu breathes life into the legacy of Nepal’s master craftsmen “Tamrakars” – by teaching them new techniques to beat the malleable metal into modern high utility products sitting in the terrains of the Himalayas. Even today walking through the small alleyways in the city visitors can train their ears to the sound of small hammers, tapping metal using ancient techniques of hammering, and sand-casting that have been carefully preserved over the last many centuries. Raising the sustainability bar
Dhaatu attempts to reach a growing number of domestic and international consumers who value high quality local products with a purpose. Though it aspires to contemporize the age old craft of Nepal it primarily focuses on creating modern useful products that are created responsibly. Dhaatu follows the model of circular economy where turning “Waste to wellness” is the heart of all its creations. The creation process begins with the collection of metal scrap from across the country and traditionally sorting and melting the alloys to make pure metal sheets. These sheets are then hand beaten, and shaped through various stages by the artisans to create gorgeous tumblers, glasses and bottles of pure copper. Through this they create value by upcycling the tons of e-waste that is piling up in the country and has no solution of being disposed off. Hence addressing the challenge of electronic waste disposal is their small initiative towards a cleaner Nepal. Along with focusing on green living Dhaatu directly and indirectly provides livelihood to over 120 artisans from nearby villages and is working to ameliorate the heritage metalcraft of Nepal. Hence through this they address the need of bringing highly skilled metal-working artisans into the economic mainstream. Their final creations are not just gorgeous to see and hold, they are packed with wellness benefits helping the consumers incorporate simple ayurvedic rituals in their daily lives. Hence Dhaatu completes the circle of “Better Me, Better You, Better Us” throughout its creation process.
“What looks good should also do good”
Dhaatu strives to revive ancient ayurvedic wisdom through functional design. Ayurveda proves that storing water in a copper vessel (preferably overnight) creates a natural purification process. It has anti bacterial, anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties. It also helps neutralize toxins and is a fantastic immunity booster. Along with being a plastic alternative, Dhaatu’s copper drink ware line of products are light weight, steeped in ayurvedic health benefits, designed to prevent premature tarnishing and are reasonably priced. Whether you’re looking for non-plastic alternatives for your own use or for gifting premium Nepal-made products with a purpose Dhaatu is just the brand for you. Note: Dhaatu products are available across multiple platforms online and are also stocked by souvenir shops across the country.
