We are looking for a Speech Therapist to support individuals with autism. ๐
Requirements:
1. Educational & Specialized Training
โ Bachelorโs degree in SpeechโLanguage Pathology, Communication Disorders, Audiology & Speech Language Pathology, or equivalent.
โ Preferably a Masterโs degree or postgraduate specialization in areas relevant to autism (e.g. developmental language disorders, neurodevelopment, autism spectrum disorders).
โ Additional certification / training in autismโspecific assessment and intervention methods (e.g. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), social communication therapy, pragmatic language therapy).
2. Clinical Experience
โ Handsโon experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), across spectrum severity (mild to severe).
โ Experience with early intervention: working with very young children (e.g. 18โ24 months, 2โ5 years), since early support tends to yield better outcomes.
โ Experience with designing and implementing individualized therapy plans based on each childโs level of functioning.
โ Experience collaborating with other professionals: occupational therapists, psychologists, special educators, behavior therapists, etc.
3. Assessment & Diagnostic Skills
โ Ability to use autism screening tools and diagnostic instruments (e.g. ADOS, ADIโR, or locally validated equivalents).
โ Capacity to assess various domains: speech (articulation, phonology), receptive and expressive language, pragmatic language (social use of language), nonโverbal communication, oral motor skills.
โ Skills in functional communication assessment, daily living communication, use of AAC if needed.
4. Intervention Skills
โ Proficiency in therapy methods for autism: e.g. ABAโbased speech/language interventions, social skills training, joint attention, communication partner training, etc.
โ Ability to work with nonverbal or minimally verbal children: using sign language, gestures, AAC devices.
โ Sensory integration awareness: how sensory processing issues might affect speech and communication.
โ Ability to adapt therapy settings for autism: structured teaching, visual supports, predictable routines, environmental modifications.
5. Soft Skills & Communication
โ Empathy, patience, understanding of autism characteristics (sensory issues, communication differences, behavior challenges).
โ Strong skills in working with parents/caregivers: training them, coaching them, giving strategies they can use at home.
โ Good communication skills, in local language(s) and ideally English if required.
โ Cultural sensitivity: understanding local norms, beliefs, and stigma around autism, especially in smaller or rural communities.
6. Regulatory / Professional Requirements (NepalโSpecific Notes)
โ Registration/licensing with Nepalโs relevant professional body (e.g. Nepal Health Professional Council, or equivalent).
โ Compliance with local health / education regulations regarding working with children.
โ Clearances: background check, child protection clearances.
โ Continuous professional development: workshops, seminars, etc. on latest best practices for ASD intervention.
