THE DARK SIDE OF BEING A DOCTOR
“Loneliness”
Profound loneliness.
You may be surrounded by colleagues, patients, friends, and family…
yet deep inside, you often stand alone.
If your family members are not doctors, they sympathize with you but rarely understand why you miss festivals, family gatherings, and important moments.
Why so many calls remain unanswered while you are on rounds, in emergency duty, or fighting to save a life.
Old school friends sometimes think you have changed.
Some call it arrogance.
Few truly understand the years of sacrifice behind the white coat.
Medical friendships also fade with time.
Colleagues move to different cities, hospitals, or countries.
Everyone gets busy in their own battles.
Even relationships become difficult.
A partner in the same profession brings competition and ego struggles.
A partner in another profession struggles to understand your priorities.
Patients may respect your knowledge,
but doctors often keep a professional distance.
Friendship is rare.
Support in difficult times is even rarer.
Colleagues may appear friendly,
yet many quietly see you as competition.
Hospitals value you—
until someone else replaces you.
Add the constant pressure of medical errors, litigation fears, workplace violence, and endless expectations.
And sometimes…
It becomes very lonely being a doctor.
Not everyone experiences this the same way.
But many doctors silently learn to live with this reality.
Because behind the stethoscope…
there is also a human heart.
