“You’re just being lazy…”
This is one of the most common labels people carry quietly.
But what often gets called “laziness” is something much more complex.
It can be the heaviness of depression that slows everything down.
It can be burnout that makes even small tasks feel exhausting.
It can be anxiety that keeps the mind stuck between starting and avoiding.
It can be emotional overload, where the system simply cannot take in more.
From the outside, it may look like inaction.
From the inside, it can feel like constant effort just to stay afloat.
When we reduce these experiences to “laziness,” we shift the focus from understanding to judgment. And over time, people begin to internalize this—questioning their own worth, discipline, and capability.
A more helpful place to begin is curiosity.
Instead of asking, “Why aren’t you doing more?”
we can ask, “What is making this difficult right now?”
That small shift creates space—for insight, for compassion, and for change.
At Mindspace, we believe mental health conversations need to move beyond labels and toward understanding. Because when people feel seen rather than judged, they are more likely to seek support and begin again.
