Your microbiome might be your best defense against cancer.

Recent breakthroughs from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) highlight the transformative role of beneficial gut bacteria, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, in preventing colorectal cancer. These microbes act as miniature chemical factories, fermenting dietary fiber into short-chain fatty acids like butyrate. This byproduct serves as a potent epigenetic regulator that triggers apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in cancerous cells while suppressing chronic inflammation. By enhancing anti-tumor immunity, a healthy microbiome creates a biological environment that is hostile to the development of malignant growths.

While a diverse ecosystem of good bacteria protects the body, an imbalance known as dysbiosis can pave the way for cancer progression.
