From 11.59pm Tuesday 17 August, all of New Zealand will move to Alert Level 4.

This measure will remain in place for 3 days until 11.59pm 20 August for all of New Zealand, with the exception of Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula with both staying in Level 4 likely for the next 7 days.

This is a response to a community outbreak in Auckland which is currently under investigation and possibly linked to the Delta variant.

International evidence and science around the Delta variant shows that it is twice as infectious and more liable to cause severe illness.

The decision to change Alert Levels reinforces the need to take swift and robust action around the latest case to detect and stamp out the possibility of any further transmission.

SH1 MANGAMUKA GORGE UPDATE – SAT 19 SEP 2020

SH1 remains closed between Victoria Valley Rd and Makene Rd since heavy rain caused slips and widespread flooding across Northland in mid-July. A single slip is keeping SH1 closed to all traffic and we hope to have the road open to one lane for light vehicles by late October, depending on the weather.

A contract has been awarded to Fulton Hogan as lead contractor to manage construction of a wall of concrete piles across the slip face on the road’s current centre line. The piles will support the road where six to seven thousand cubic metres of rock and soil have fallen away, undermining the road.

Meanwhile, SH1 through the gorge has been getting some special maintenance attention. While the road is closed maintenance, crews have been hard at work, repairing the road, replacing roadside guard rails, drainage maintenance and generally tidying up the roadside.

Until SH1 reopens, the recommended detour route is SH10 with motorists advised to allow an extra 20-30 minutes for the journey. Waka Kotahi acknowledges the disruption to the local community and the extra time and cost of having to travel on SH10. As of 12 noon on Wednesday 12 August, Auckland will move to Alert Level 3. The rest of New Zealand will move to Alert Level 2.

What does this mean for Auckland?

Under Alert Level 3, you are encouraged work from home if you can.

If you are currently in Auckland and do not live in Auckland, we suggest that you go home. Practise good hygiene and be conscious of your health. We recommend that you keep your bubble small.

Businesses are able to open, but should not physically interact with customers. Essential services including healthcare, justice services and businesses providing necessities are able to open. Bars and restaurants should close, but takeaways are allowed.

Schools in Auckland should close, except for children of essential workers. We encourage students to learn from home if possible.

Maintain physical distancing of 2 metres outside your home, including on public transport and it is highly recommended that you wear a mask if you are out and about.

Public transport can continue to operate with strict health and safety requirements. You should maintain physical distancing and wearing a mask.

Public venues should close. This includes libraries, museums, cinemas, food courts, gyms, pools, playgrounds and markets.

Gatherings of up to 10 people can continue, but only for wedding services, funerals and tangihanga. Physical distancing and public health measures should be maintained.

Inter-regional travel is highly limited to, for example, essential workers, with limited exemptions for others.

People at high risk of severe illness such as older people and those with existing medical conditions are encouraged to stay at home where possible, and take additional precautions when leaving home.

What does this mean for the rest of New Zealand?

The rest of New Zealand will go into Alert Level 2 on 12 noon on Wednesday 12 August. You can still continue to go to work and school, with physical distancing.

Wear masks if you can in public.

No more than 100 people at gatherings, including weddings, birthdays, funerals and tangihanga.

Businesses can open to the public if they are following public health guidance, which include physical distancing and record keeping.

People at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19, for example those with underlying medical conditions and old people are encouraged to take additional precautions when leaving home.

Practice good hygiene - stay home if sick.

Here's an update from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency - Northland - there is continued movement and potentially another slip forming on State Highway 1 in the Mangumuka Gorge, so their road clearing crews have had to move their equipment away from the summit for now:
__________

Rain-soaked slips on the move in Mangamuka Gorge on SH1

Assessment and clearance of slips on State Highway 1 through the Mangamuka Gorge has stopped at the top of the summit because there’s still movement on the hillside after last week’s deluge of rain.

Metservice is forecasting some showers today, but the outlook is for the weather to improve by the weekend.

Friday’s deluge left eight significant slips and many smaller ones along a 12 km stretch of SH1 in the Mangamuka Gorge. Another slip appears to be forming south of the summit and the three biggest slips on the northern side are still moving, says Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Northland System Manager Jacqui Hori-Hoult.

Road clearing crews have moved their equipment down the road away from the summit for now.

“There’s a huge safety issue for our workers at the moment and we’ll just have to wait rather than compromise on that.”

“We’ll also be putting up a drone so we get a view of what we can’t see from the road. There may be other slips and instability above the road in places and we need to take that into account.”

“The major overslip closing the road starts well up the hillside and there are big trees left hanging where the ground has fallen away. With expected rain and high winds this could loosen up more material to fall on to the road”

It’s not just the slips above the road that are still moving. Half the width of the road has slumped in one place and when compared to photos taken at the weekend, it has dropped further in the last couple of days.

On the southern side of the gorge, the slips are smaller and road crews have been working to clear them.

Ms Hori-Hoult says it may be possible to open the gorge to light vehicles, with the road in places reduced to one lane.

“We’ll know more on that next week. The team is working hard to ensure it is safe to open the road.”

For now, SH1 is closed between Victoria Valley Road and Makene Road. SH10 is the detour with motorists advised to allow an extra 20-30 minutes for their journey.
