Heat Warning β Important Health Advice from Akaroa Health
With high temperatures forecast across Akaroa and the Bays, Akaroa Health is urging everyone to take extra care to prevent heat-related illness. We are already seeing a number of patients with heat and/or dehydration related symptoms.
Please follow this advice:
* Drink water regularly throughout the day. Do not wait until you feel thirsty.
* Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, particularly between 11am and 4pm.
* Stay in cool, shaded, or air-conditioned environments where possible.
* Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and a hat when outdoors.
* Eat light meals and increase fluid intake.
* Take cool showers or use a damp cloth on the neck and wrists to help lower body temperature.
People at higher risk include: older adults, young children, pregnant people, those with chronic medical conditions, and anyone working or exercising outdoors.
Seek medical advice if you or someone else develops symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, nausea, headache, excessive fatigue, or fainting.
Please also check on neighbours, family, and friends during this period of extreme heat.
