Hi, I am Helene and I am a registered remedial massage therapist (neuromuscular and myofascial techniques) and Pilates instructor. I love using hands-on techniques and Pilates principles to help people move better, feel better, and recover faster. It is my mission that you love the body you have and regain and retain the strength, energy, and ability to do the things that you love to do. I believe that everybody deserves to have an exceptionally good functioning body.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – More Than Just the Wrist ?!

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is often thought of as just a wrist issue, but the median nerve travels all the way from your neck, through the shoulder and arm, down to the wrist and hand. Compression or irritation anywhere along this pathway can create those familiar CTS symptoms:

👉 Tingling or numbness in the thumb, index, middle, or ring finger
👉 Weakness in the hand (struggling to grip or button clothes)
👉 Burning sensations in the hand or fingers
👉 Pain in the wrist, palm, or forearm – often worse at night or with repetitive use

What contributes to CTS?
Wrist anatomy and/or past injury
Repetitive hand movements (typing, knitting, tools)
Health conditions like diabetes, arthritis, thyroid issues, pregnancy
Compression points higher up the chain (forearm, shoulder, or even the neck)
Age & gender

Why the neck matters:
Since the median nerve starts in the cervical spine, poor posture, nerve compression, or muscle tightness in the neck and shoulder can either mimic or worsen CTS. That’s why a full assessment is so important.

At this year’s Massage Aotearoa NZ annual meeting, I’ll be taking a short and interactive NZSL (New Zealand Sign Language) workshop.
A big thank you to Merge NZ for trusting me to organise this session—I'm excited to share the beauty of NZSL with my fellow massage therapists.

This relaxed, hands-on session is a taster—designed to spark reflection on how we welcome and support clients from all walks of life. Learning NZSL has been like music to my ears: it’s expressive, fun, and deeply meaningful. It’s also one of Aotearoa’s official languages, along with Te Reo Māori, and a beautiful expression of cultural identity.

This workshop isn’t about mastering signs—it’s about expanding our awareness, deepening connection, and starting conversations about accessibility and cultural inclusion within our practices.

If scar tissue is affecting the way your body moves and functions, it could be stopping you from getting the results you want, no matter how old the scar is.

Scars (and even deeper fibrous tissue) can restrict movement, alter muscle function, and place strain on surrounding areas. Even though the scars healed properly and look fine, if they’re not addressed, your progress might only ever be partial or short-lived.

Scar therapy helps ease those restrictions, allowing your body to respond more effectively to your massage therapy sessions, exercises, and everyday movements.

Waking Up With a Sore Jaw or Headaches?
You might be clenching—day or night.

Bruxism, or jaw clenching and teeth grinding, affects over 1 in 5 people; it usually lessens in adulthood. And Most people only notice when it starts to hurt—or when a partner hears grinding at night! Symptoms can be:
🔹 Jaw pain or stiffness
🔹 Headaches or neck tension
🔹 Clicking or crunching in the jaw (TMJ pain)
🔹 Tooth sensitivity or wear
🔹 Limited mouth opening
🔹 Ear symptoms like pain, buzzing, or dizziness
🔹 Scalloped tongue or bony lumps on the gums (Tori)

It’s not just stress (though that’s a big factor). Other common causes include:
• Sleep apnea
• Quiet reflux
• Certain medications
• Postural dysfunction
• Jaw habits like gum chewing, poor tongue posture, or wearing a face mask
• Stimulants like caffeine, alcohol, smoking
• Family history

If you're noticing tooth or bite changes, your dentist may recommend a night guard. But if you're experiencing muscular tension, TMJ pain, or headaches, soft tissue therapy can make a real difference.
