Why Avoid Fruit When You Have a Cough?

🍐 Too Cold in Nature
Most fruits are cooling. When you’re coughing—often due to cold pathogens—eating fruit can trap that cold inside the body.

🍉 Adds Dampness
Fruit is also heavy in dampness. This extra dampness can make phlegm worse and prolong your cough.

🍎 Weakens the Digestive System
With low yang energy, the body is prone to phlegm and fluid retention, especially in children. Eating fruit while coughing can further weaken the spleen and stomach, making recovery much harder.

💚 At Sue Sun Holistic Health, we care for your child’s health every step of the way.

Some cases of rhinitis, though lasting for a long time, are considered in Chinese medicine to be due to unresolved external pathogens with internal heat stagnation. Put simply, it means the common cold has not fully recovered. The nasal congestion and discharge are actually sequelae of the cold, but in Western medicine they are diagnosed as “rhinitis.”
By using Chinese herbs that disperse wind-heat pathogens, once the pathogenic factors are cleared, the nasal congestion and discharge—symptoms of rhinitis—naturally disappear.

In other cases of rhinitis, from a Chinese medicine perspective, the condition is due to insufficient vital qi and lingering pathogenic factors. In this situation, treatment must not only eliminate the pathogens but also strengthen the body’s upright qi. When there is congenital deficiency, both the spleen and kidney need to be simultaneously tonified.

Nowadays, many chronic diseases require lifelong medication, such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypothyroidism, skin disorders, and asthma. But in the past, there was no such concept of taking medicine forever.

The goal of treatment should be striving for a cure, not just long-term symptom control through continuous medication. That is not what medicine ought to be.

In fact, for many chronic conditions that Western medicine regards as needing lifelong medication, traditional Chinese medicine often offers the hope of a cure. Isn’t it better to have more options available?

In traditional Chinese medicine, there is a saying: “When the spleen and stomach are weak, the nine orifices will not function properly.” The nine orifices are the eyes, ears, nostrils, mouth, urethra, and a**s.

Today, we see more and more children needing glasses at a very young age, and rhinitis has also become very common. These conditions are often linked to spleen deficiency.
Similarly, issues such as difficulty urinating or constipation are also related to weakness in the spleen and stomach.

Many children nowadays resemble the elderly: they lack strength, have poor appetite, and avoid physical activity. If you look closely, you’ll notice that these children are often prone to problems in one or more of the nine orifices.

Six Types of Cough in Children
1. Morning cough: Often due to weakness of the spleen and stomach.
2. Heat cough: Cough with phlegm, accompanied by yellow nasal discharge.
3. Cold cough: Cough with phlegm, accompanied by clear nasal discharge.
4. Night cough: Related to phlegm and food accumulation, with internal heat.
5. Dry cough: Throat feels dry and itchy, coughing but unable to expel phlegm.
6. Heat cough, dry cough, night cough: Treated by clearing excess fire, strengthening the spleen, moistening the stomach and lungs.

Nowadays, many children experience recurrent abdominal pain. Although the episodes are not very frequent, they can significantly affect the child’s well-being. Such children often present with malnutrition, a sallow complexion, low energy, and a tendency to catch colds. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this condition is often attributed to spleen and stomach deficiency with cold or food retention. After regulating and strengthening the spleen and stomach, the abdominal pain ceases, the child’s constitution improves, and their resistance to illness is enhanced.

In winter, the hands and feet are cold without sweating, while in summer the palms feel hot with sweating. This indicates blood deficiency. When the blood is deficient, the body is more susceptible to pathogenic factors: in winter, it is easily affected by cold pathogens, leading to cold hands and feet; in summer, it is more likely to be invaded by summer-heat or damp-heat, resulting in hot palms and sweating. In addition, such individuals are prone to wind invasion — even a slight breeze or exposure to air conditioning can easily cause colds and headaches.

Many women used to love spicy food. Even though they’ve stopped eating it, leftover internal heat can still cause problems such as trouble falling asleep, light sleep, waking easily, vivid dreams, early and light periods, mood swings before menstruation, red cheeks with small breakouts, sweaty palms when anxious, and constipation.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doesn’t just treat one symptom at a time. Once the root cause - trapped heat - is cleared, many of these issues improve.

This reflects a key TCM idea: treat the body as a whole, and different problems can share the same solution.

In traditional Chinese medicine, it is said that “the lungs are the receptacle for phlegm.” This means that the lungs govern the functions of dispersing (xuān) and descending (sù). The dispersing function helps distribute body fluids to the skin and body surface, while the descending function regulates the water pathways, allowing fluids from the upper source to flow downward smoothly. If the lungs lose their ability to disperse and descend, fluids in the upper body cannot be properly distributed or drained. As a result, they accumulate in the lungs and transform into phlegm-dampness.
