Women’s mental health in Aotearoa: what the research shows

This post draws directly from New Zealand population data and peer-reviewed research.

The evidence is clear:
• Women experience higher levels of psychological distress than men
• Unmet need for mental health support is rising
• Maternal mental health remains a significant concern
• Exposure to interpersonal and domestic violence is strongly linked to long-term mental and physical health outcomes
• Māori women are disproportionately affected, reflecting wider inequities in access, safety, and care

These patterns are not about individual weakness or failure.

They reflect:
– cumulative stress and trauma
– systemic barriers to care
– social and economic pressures
– under-resourced mental health pathways

At MindfulWell, our role is to:
• share evidence-based mental health education
• reduce stigma through informed conversation
• help women connect with counsellors and health coaches who understand trauma, nervous system health, and women’s lived experiences

Education is a starting point.
Access to the right support changes outcomes.

If these findings resonate, you are not alone, and you are not broken.
Understanding is powerful, and support matters.

Sources include Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand (women’s mental health statistics) and peer-reviewed research.

Your Support Can Bring Hope 🤍

Even a small donation can make a big difference.
Here’s how your contributions help create access to care:

✨ $25 – Provides resources and early support for someone taking their first step toward counselling
✨ $50 – Helps subsidise a trauma-informed counselling session
✨ $100 – Supports a full counselling session for someone who would otherwise go without care

Every contribution helps remove barriers, restore safety, and remind someone they are not alone.

💛 New on the MindfulWell Blog

We’re sharing something close to our hearts today: how the body holds memory understaning trauma in the nervous system.

Many women don’t realise that tension, pain, shallow breathing, or even digestive and hormonal changes can be the body’s way of holding onto past experiences.

At MindfulWell, we are trauma-informed, trained professionals dedicated to helping you reconnect with your body, regulate your nervous system, and feel safe again. Healing isn’t about forgetting it’s about feeling at home in your body once more.

✨ In our latest post, we explore:

How trauma shows up in the body

Why your nervous system reacts the way it does

Gentle, practical ways to begin supporting your body today

Food language is important. The words we use around food can either support safety, flexibility, self-trust, and a stable body image or reinforce shame, restriction, and all-or-nothing thinking. Terms like “naughty,” “cheat meal,” or “off track” often seem harmless, but psychologically they attach morality to eating. Over time, this can increase guilt, body dissatisfaction, and disconnection from internal cues such as hunger, fullness, and satisfaction. For many people, this also disrupts emotional regulation and reinforces cycles of control and self-criticism. At MindfulWell, we use body-neutral, trauma-informed language. Health is not a moral test. Food is not a measure of worth. Support not shame, creates sustainable change. — MindfulWell

How Health Coaching Works at Mindfulwell collective:

Health coaching is a preventive, education-based service that supports practical changes to everyday habits and lifestyle patterns that influence both mental and physical health. Sessions focus on building awareness, understanding how the body responds to lifestyle inputs, and creating realistic, achievable steps toward improved wellbeing.

Sessions are typically 45–60 minutes and are often offered in time-limited blocks of 3–6 or 6–12 sessions, spaced fortnightly or monthly. Some clients also choose ongoing or seasonal check-ins for accountability and preventive care. Nutrition and eating support within health coaching is non-prescriptive and non-diet focused, emphasising nourishment, body awareness, and sustainable habits rather than restriction or rigid rules. Education and guidance are provided within scope and may complement medical or dietetic care where appropriate.

Health coaching can be accessed as a standalone service or integrated alongside counselling. When offered together, it bridges emotional support with practical lifestyle tools, supporting long-term wellbeing in a grounded, nervous-system-informed way.

PMDD is often dismissed as “extreme PMS,” but the reality is far more complex. It is a clinically recognised condition with a biological basis, yet many people live with it for years without a clear explanation for what they’re experiencing. The result is a recurring cycle of emotional and mental health symptoms that can feel confusing, isolating, and overwhelming.

PMDD can show up in powerful ways, both emotionally and physically. Many people describe:

Sudden and intense mood shifts, including deep sadness or feelings of emptiness

Heightened irritability or anger that feels disproportionate or difficult to manage

Increased anxiety, panic, or a constant sense of internal tension

Extreme exhaustion paired with disrupted sleep patterns

Difficulty focusing, thinking clearly, or feeling mentally present

One of the reasons PMDD is so frequently misunderstood is because it closely mirrors symptoms of depression. Low mood, changes in sleep, reduced energy, and distressing thoughts can appear in both. The key difference lies in pattern and timing.

With PMDD, symptoms follow a predictable hormonal rhythm. They typically arise in the days or weeks after ovulation and ease soon after menstruation begins. This cyclical nature can feel like a switch—intense symptoms appear, then lift—only to return again the following month. Current understanding suggests PMDD is linked to how the brain responds to normal hormonal fluctuations, rather than a hormone imbalance itself.

In contrast, clinical depression is not cycle-dependent. Symptoms are ongoing, last for weeks or longer, and are not tied to changes in the menstrual cycle.

✨ Please note: This content is offered for psychoeducation and support, not as medical advice. If this feels familiar, reaching out to a GP is advised. We are qualified professionals in mental health and wellbeing we offer mental health and wellbeing support for PMDD.
