helping people across across the lifespan
Globally Music Therapy is an emergent allied health modality that uses music as the medium of the therapeutic process. Its value in modern times was recognised in post-world war two hospitals where traumatised, injured war veterans were found to respond very positively to music. Music therapy can be traced back to Pythagoras and earlier. In mythology music was highly esteemed as a creative healing art. Today music therapy is found in many areas of health and wellbeing as an alternative to more traditional forms of therapy such as psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, diversional therapy or play therapy. In New Zealand music therapy is still very new but is definitely gaining momentum and profile as an increasing number of Music Therapists graduate from the Massey University course. A Music Therapist works within a Scope of Practice, a Code of Ethics and rules of professional conduct, standards and confidentiality. Registration with a National Association is mandatory to receiving a current practisng certificate. Holistique NZ Music Therapy:
