🎒🏡 School Holidays!

With the kids home for the holidays, it’s the perfect time to turn everyday moments into language-learning fun!

Here are 3 easy, screen-free ways to boost speech & language skills at home:
 🎲 Play board games – Practice turn-taking, asking questions, and naming objects
 📚 Read together daily – Talk about the pictures, guess what happens next, and ask “why” and “how” questions
 🍓 Get talking in the kitchen – Count items, describe ingredients, and follow simple instructions while baking or cooking!

💡 Remember: quality interactions at home can have a big impact on your child’s communication growth!

🌟 Milestone Monday! 🌟

Wondering if your 2-year-old’s speech and language development is on track? 🤔💬

By age 2, children should be able to:

🗣️ Say around 50 words
💬 Combine 2 words (“More juice”, “Bye Daddy”)
🧠 Understand basic questions (“Where’s your ball?”)
👂 Follow simple directions (“Get your shoes”)

But every child develops at their own pace—and that’s okay!

If your child isn’t meeting these milestones or you’re unsure, trust your gut. Early support can make a big difference.

Today marks our first Tinygiants Explore & Thrive Feeding Clinic, a joint SLT/ Dietitian run service dedicated to supporting babies and children up to 16 years old who experience feeding and nutritional difficulties.

It’s something that’s been in the pipeline for awhile and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.

This year was the year I made the decision to leave my role at Kidz First and focus fully on growing Little Leaps. What a year it’s been! We are so grateful for the amazing children and families we’ve had the privilege of working with.

Looking forward to all that 2025 has in store!

These holidays we have been using the extra time at home to work on some speech sounds that my daughter finds tricky.

She struggles with a process called fronting, meaning she says a “t” for a ‘k’ and a “d” for ‘g’. For example, key sounds like “tea” and girl sounds like “dirl”. This is quite common in young children but typically resolves by the age of 4.

She loves for making practice fun!

Introducing Wei-Yuen ✨

Wei-Yuen has been working with me for a while now so I thought an introduction was well overdue. We previously worked together for many years in the Child Development Service and I am so happy that we get to continue this at .leaps.slt.

Wei-Yuen completed her Master of Speech Language Therapy degree at the University of Auckland in 2015 and has been working with a paediatric population ever since.

She has a love for a naturalistic and functional approach to therapy and intervention.

Wei-Yuen’s particular interests include paediatric feeding, building communication skills (using sign, speech/ language, visuals) and children with neurological diversity.

Sharing books is a wonderful way to help your child develop their speech and language skills 🌟

These books are some of our favourites.. they have lots of lovely repetition, rhyme and fun words to read.

As well as reading the story, talk about the pictures. Pause and give your child time to respond.

It’s good to share favourite books again and again. Repetition helps children to understand and remember the language they hear.

I’m so excited to introduce myself and my business 💫
I’m Alice, Founder and Speech Language Therapist at Little Leaps.
Little Leaps has been in the pipeline for awhile.. my plans to launch back in 2019 were derailed when I found out I was pregnant with twins! Fast forward 3 and a bit years and we’re finally here and ready to see you 🎉
