Shannon Ruddell and Nadia Bullivant, the co-founders of ALR, are passionate about early intervention and monitoring of cancer related lymphoedema and provide rehabilitation services to help clients return to their pre-cancer levels of function. As part of the early intervention and monitoring programme we teach our clients about lymphoedema and provide tools they can add to their tool box to help reduce the risk of lymphoedema developing and help to identify lymphoedema early to prevent progression of symptoms. For those clients who are diagnosed with lymphoedema, our goal is to empower them to take control of their condition through an individualised management program that includes skin care advice, exercise prescription, lymphatic massage and prescription of compression garments. Our therapists are holistic in their approach and can also use their specialist skills in pelvic health and PINC and STEEL Rehabilitation to optimise treatment outcomes.

Kinesio tape is often utilized as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for lymphoedema. Here’s how kinesio tape can be beneficial for lymphoedema treatment:

1. Lymphatic Drainage: Kinesio tape is applied in a specific way to lift the skin, which helps to create more space beneath it. This lifting action can assist in improving lymphatic drainage and reducing swelling.

2. Improved Mobility: The elasticity of kinesio tape allows for a greater range of motion while still providing support. This can help you to maintain your regular activities without restrictions.

3. Pain Reduction: Some people experience discomfort due to lymphoedema. Kinesio tape can help alleviate this discomfort by providing support to the affected area.

4. Muscle Support: The tape can provide additional support to muscles that may be weakened or altered due to lymphoedema, assisting with overall function.

5. Posture Improvement: Proper application of kinesio tape can encourage better posture, which may help in reducing the strain on lymphatic vessels.

Our lymphoedema Physio’s are all skilled at using kinesio tape and can help decide if this is the right treatment for you.
Proper technique and application are essential for ensuring effectiveness and avoiding any potential adverse effects.

Compression Garments 💪🦵

Compression is one of the MOST important ways we manage lymphoedema

Finding the right compression to suit you can be like finding the perfect pair of jeans, so you really need someome who specialises in compression to work with you

Compression should

✅ Feel firm, supportive and comfortable throughout the day
✅ Should prevent the increase of swelling over the course of the day
✅ Reduce the feeling of heaviness, ache, tightness and discomfort
✅ Should be reviewed following any change in limb size or weight to ensure the correct size
✅ Replaced regularly (alternating 2 garments should last approximately 12 months)
✅ Washed daily

Should not
❌ Cause pain/discomfort, pins and needles, numbness or change of colour in hand/fingers/toes
❌ Cause redness, irritation or marks in the skin particularly top band, elbow or knee region
❌ Be extremely difficult to get on/off
❌ If wearing a sleeve to wrist it should not cause swelling into the hand

If you have any concerns regarding your current compression please 📲 DM or contact us via email 📩 info@aucklandlymph.co.nz

Cording / Axillary Web Syndrome is a common side effect following breast surgery

➡️ Cording can start within days or weeks after surgery.

➡️ The first sign of cording is tightness and pain when the arm is stretched and raised above shoulder level.

➡️ You may see thin bands that look and feel like guitar strings within the armpit, arm, into the breast or chest wall.

🙌 Cording can be treated and managed well with physiotherapy and involves exercises, massage techniques to stretch and soften the cord and manual lymphatic drainage.

💪 With appropriate physiotherapy and exercises, most cases of cording are fully resolve within a few weeks or months.

👀 Note photos of cording before and after 1 physiotherapy treatment session

📩 DM for more information or book online if you have signs or symptoms of cording

📑Further recommendations were published earlier this year by the NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network) Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology for Survivorship highlighting the importance of screening to prevent lymphoedema.

Following the PREVENT Trial research we know if patients are diagnosed at stage 0 and 1 we can reverse these symptoms and prevent lymphoedema in up to 90% of cases, whereas stages 2 and 3 are less responsive to treatment often leading to progressive and debilitating symptoms.

With stats like that, quick, easy and painless screening is a no brainer to improve survivorship outcomes

For more information or to book a screening appointment with one of our certified lymphoedema physiotherapists see booking information in profile or email 📩 info@aucklandlymph.co.nz
