SWAPS - Breakfast edition

Little swaps here and there make all the difference! Most of the time we need something that is quick, easy but still delicious.

When it comes to choosing breakfast we want to include a good source of protein, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. This is to support stable energy, blood sugar, and mood, while keeping us satiated.

This could look like adding:
-h**p seeds
-chia seeds
-nut/seed butters
-coconut chips
-protein powder
-coconut yogurt
-nuts/seeds

While avoiding:
-high sugar
-processed foods
-wheat

What does your family’s breakfasts look like?

Constipation in children 💩

So common but what’s the cause behind it?

It could be as simple as diet, anxiety around using the toilet or something more complex.

This is something I see in clinic a lot! So here are some helpful tips to try first.

Seasonal allergies 🤧

Spring is well in truely in full force 🌸 while it brings much needed sun shine and spending more time outdoors, for some it also brings a whole host of unwanted symptoms!

Hay fever is an over activation of the immune system when in contact with repeated environmental triggers.

Good news is this can often be prevented and reduced!

-Look into your gut health (an experienced practitioner will be able to help)

-Incorporate berries, capsicum, and broccoli which contain vitamin C and antioxidants

-Incorporate quercetin which inhibits histamine release (natural antihistamine)

-Check your vitamin D levels (through a blood test) as this help to modulate the immune system

-Avoid or reduce refined sugar and processed foods as this causes inflammation and damages gut health.

🌼 If this is you let me know what your going to try! 🌼

Eat.real.food 👊🏼

Imagine building your house out of rotten wood or disintegrating bricks. Remember the fable about building your house on sand? Or the one about the three pigs? Your structure and foundation matter. Why would you build your body from defective ingredients? ⁣

For example, we need the best quality fats—our brain is 60 percent fat, our nerve coverings are all made from fat, every one of your 10 trillion cells is wrapped in a little fatty membrane. Do you really want to make them from oxidized damaged refined oils in your French fries or KFC? ⁣

We also need the best quality protein. The body makes most of its important molecules from protein including muscle, cells, and immune molecules. Not all protein is the same. The best type of protein to build muscle is other muscle—animal protein. You can get protein from plant foods, but the quality is lower and it has lower levels of key amino acids needed to synthesize new muscle, especially the branched chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine and also lysine and sulfur based amino acids). ⁣

There are also compounds such as phytates in plant proteins like beans and nuts that impair protein absorption. Rather than being turned into muscle, plant proteins are often just burned as calories. ⁣

If you are vegan, especially as you age, you need to ensure you get these by increasing the overall volume of protein rich plant foods, adding protein powders, and supplementing with BCAA. If you want to eat less meat and include more plant proteins, combining them helps the body utilize the plant protein from beans. Think chili con carne! ⁣

And don’t forget all the vitamins and minerals we need to build tissues, muscles, and bones, including vitamin D, vitamin K, calcium, magnesium, and more. Next time you chomp down on something, ask yourself if you are fine with it becoming part of you for the long term. If not, don’t eat it and find the best quality ingredients you can, ingredients that help you thrive. ⁣

📚The first day back at school can be tough, scary, and overwhelming (for both the child and parents).

Here are my hot tips on how to avoid those big emotions and stressful mornings!

1) If it’s your child’s first day of a new school or day-care ensure you have meet the teacher and class before hand so the child knows what to expect.

2) The first few weeks don’t overcommit to extra-curricular activities or stress about homework, they are going to be tired so let them relax.

3) Having a morning routine and practicing the week before, a simple checklist that they can tick off works well. For younger children, visual stickers of the task (etc brushing teeth) is also helpful.

4) Being organised, getting the child (or you) to get their clothes, shoes, and lunchbox ready the night before. (This will also correlate into the classroom with organisation).

5) If your child is nervous to go to school/kindy, first ask why and don’t reply with “don’t be silly you’ll be fine”. Instead acknowledge their feelings and come up with a strategy when they are feeling this way. Perhaps they are worried about getting lost or not knowing anyone. A phrase you can use is “I understand you might be feeling a bit scared but here’s what we can do” and offer a plan.

6) Get them excited for school or daycare, take them shopping for supplies or a new lunchbox or drink bottle.

Have you got a child starting school or daycare for the first time?

GINKGO 💚 (Ginko biloba)

Ginkgo can be found in New Zealand although it originates from Southeast Asia.

🧠It's bitter and interestingly shaped leaf (I think like the two hemispheres of the brain) has a myriad of uses from cognition, memory improvement, increased blood flow supporting many conditions such as Dementia, Alzheimer's and ADHD.

⛑It is also a hepatoprotective, meaning to protect the liver (hepato/liver). Many studies have found it's positive effect on liver diseases and alcohol induced damage with influence from it's antioxidant properties.

When working with herbs or supplements we want to look at the whole picture, all aspects of health and the body as a whole. One herb or supplement isn't going to 'fix the issue' that's why I strongly urge you to consult with a professional to work on your individual needs.
