Did you know? In 1978, Dr Peter Mansfield from the University of Nottingham unveiled the first full-body prototype for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), transforming medical diagnostics. This groundbreaking invention allows us to explore the human body's intricacies without the use of X-rays. 🌐👩‍⚕️

Did you know? The loud, repetitive knocking or banging sounds you hear during an MRI scan aren't just for dramatic effect. The sound is the vibration of metal coils in the machine caused by rapid pulses of electricity.

Believe it or not, some MRI scans can capture images so quickly that they can "freeze" the motion of a blinking eye. This incredible speed allows for the study of rapid physiological processes.

Can MRI aid iris melanoma diagnosis?

While MRI has demonstrated its effectiveness in diagnosing and planning treatments for posterior eye melanomas, research on its application to iris lesions remains limited. At CAMRI, we're honoured to stand alongside Joevy Lim and her dedicated team as they embark on their research to improve our investigation of iris melanoma and guide treatment decisions by enhancing existing MRI protocols.

Joevy says, “Our pilot study on MRI in Iris Melanoma wouldn't have been possible without the unwavering support of the CAMRI team and the Pilot Grant awarded to us in September 2022.”

Building on their discoveries, the team led by Professor Charles McGhee, Head of Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Auckland has taken the next step by applying for additional funding to expand the project to encompass the investigation of all anterior segment tumours in the near future.

Stay tuned for exciting updates on this incredible project!

We're thrilled to shine a spotlight on an incredible research study, MoPED (Moderate-to-late Preterm Babies' Early Brain Development), which CAMRI has offered a Pilot Study Grant for and assists in MRI scanning.

MoPED aims to uncover the secrets of early brain development in moderate-to-late preterm (MLP) babies born between 32 and 36 weeks. As these babies often face unique challenges, outcomes of this study could be a game changer.

Please join us in congratulating MoPED and the entire team for achieving a monumental milestone: 100 babies scanned, 100 stories of progress and potential. Thank you for your dedication, and we’re excited to see the positive impact your discoveries will have on generations to come.

Led by Dr Hayley Reynolds, Senior Research Fellow at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, University of Auckland - Waipapa Taumata Rau, SI-BiRT is an innovative clinical trial that's rewriting the rules for prostate cancer patients who've undergone radiotherapy.

Hayley and her team are on a mission to develop MRI biomarkers that can be a game-changer in understanding a patient's response to radiotherapy. Early response biomarkers could be the key to unlocking personalised treatments and better outcomes.

“What was really helpful for us is that we got a Pilot Study Grant from CAMRI to do some initial scans on volunteers to get the protocol setup.”

Stay tuned for more updates on this remarkable journey toward better health.

Meet Anna Lydon, CAMRI's Charge MRI Technologist, who also leads much of CAMRI's advanced research implementation. Anna started her career as a radiographer, and went on to specialise in cardiac cath lab and angiography imaging. After an introduction to cardiac MRI at Manukau Radiology she was excited with the non-invasive and detailed imaging of the heart that CMR offered. This led her to join CAMRI, which was established in 2004 and had a focus on cardiovascular imaging and research.

Anna is currently the Secretary of NZ Chapter of ISMRT with the aim to promote MRI education for technologists throughout Australia and New Zealand. She has presented at conferences overseas on latest advancements in her field and has collaborated with Siemens to bring new technology to CAMRI.

With Anna’s insights and expanded skill set, she is an asset to the team and fellow researchers.
