Progesterone makes us FEEL GOOD

If you aren’t feeling good in the second half of your cycle, chances are low progesterone levels is behind this.

Progesterone is the hormone we make after ovulation.

It’s not only important for fertility, but also for preventing osteoporosis, heart disease, dementia, stroke, and breast cancer.

PMS long before your period?
Wild mood swings?
Spotting?
Cramping?
Heavy periods?
Symptoms of perimenopause?

When possible we can elevate our levels naturally, with diet lifestyle changes, stress support, and short-medium term supplement or herbal medicine courses.

Sometimes micronised progesterone (body-identical progesterone) is the appropriate treatment for heavy periods, managing symptoms of perimenopause, endometriosis, adenomyosis, PCOS, PMDD, migraines.

Body-identical progesterone/ micronised progesterone is safer and gentler than synthetic progestins (which is what most oral contraceptive pills contain), which can come with side effects and risks.

I KNOW you don’t WANT to cut stuff out..but let’s get real. Your endo body is more sensitive, it’s more inflamed, it’s got a lot going on. Give your bod a break from the above stuff for a bit, and reap the benefits. One really important thing I didn’t add to the picture part of this post. (maybe I forgot - maybe my two toddlers were shrieking so loud I was rushing to finish up work - maybe I thought I’d try keep it simple and talk fats later - who knows) but a really important diet thing to be aware of is BAD INFLAMMATORY FATS. These are bad AF. Trans-fats, found in processed foods, fried fast foods, packaged foods. A good way to spot them is they are fats that were liquid but now are solid; hydrogenated oils (eg mayo 😭 a personal weak point of mine), margarine, faux butters..etc. These are all hugely inflammatory and really really bad for our liver, heart health, brain health, general inflammation throughout the body. GOOD fats: butter, tallow, cold-pressed seed oils, olive oil, oily fish. I think this fat topic deserves its own post, so that will come. Let me know if changing diet has helped your endo (or pain inflammation condition of any sort)!

Are your food reactions too random to even track? Sometimes you can eat a thing, then other times it makes you rush to the toilet, or blocks you up, or makes you feel nauseated and ill. Or I f it feels easier to NOT eat, and then when you do eat you may as well eat all and any of the things because who knows what will trigger your gut issues or your endo flare ups.

These are all more common than you might realise, and all very possible to address. You don’t have to live with such sh*tty gut function. Book in and let’s sort it out.

Essential Fatty Acids are anti-inflammatory and most of us are deficient. Animal studies have shown decreased endo associated pain with sufficient EFA intake. Human studies have shown higher circulating EFAs is associated with reduced incidence of endometriosis. Human studies have also shown a higher dietary intake of EFAs is associated with a reduction in circulating inflammatory cytokines.
Cruciferous vegetables: great source of phytonutrients; supports Phase 1 liver detoxification (important for hormone metabolism- oestrogen!!!- ); are a source of calcium-d-glucarate which inhibits a bacterial enzyme called beta-glucaronidase which unhelpfully can recycle estrogen (we want less of that bad boy in endo bodies, not recycling it back in!)

The gut microbiome and endo have a bidirectional relationship. Gut dysbiosis increases the risk of endo. Endo further contributes to a dysbiosic gut. Positive diet-induced microbiome changes REDUCES endometriosis risk.
“Alterations in the gut microbiome of individuals with endometriosis (changes include reduced diversity, microbial imbalances, and the presence of pathogenic bacteria), these changes can disrupt immune function, increase inflammation, and contribute to the chronic inflammatory state seen in endo.” Jiang et al, 2021 ‘Intricate Connections between the Microbiota and Endometriosis’.
Sometimes - for a period of time -our diet needs to be strategically specific, exclude foods, or therapeutically strict BUT in general and long term we need to eat a wide range of foods in order to positively impact the microbiome and decrease inflammation. If you are struggling to eat a wide range of healthy fibre-rich vegetables and fruits - if you get gut symptoms reactions bloating etc - this is a sign you need to look at your gut health and function.

Eating organic and spray free where possible is a potent way to reduce toxin intake and have a greater intake of easily available antioxidants. Of course the cost of living crisis is REAL which is why I love the dirty dozen & clean 15 lists from EWG - I’ve used a NZ dirty dozen list - you might be able to find locally relevant lists too! I’d love to see them! 🎗

Vit D is essential for immune cell function. We know immune cell function in endo bodies is altered and often dysfunctional. Not only that but I am yet to have an endo client who has great serum vit D levels while symptomatic!. It’s not hard to remedy a deficiency, but is something that’s often overlooked. Vit D’s role in fertility is also very influential; we have vit d receptors on both the outer casings of the egg and s***m which help them communicate and fertilise! Women/female-bodies with endo seem to have better fertility outcomes when vit D levels are high or higher than average. The quoted information in the post above is from the following study: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3626048/ 🎗

You DO NOT have had to have had a surgical confirmation of diagnosis to particiapte in this study.Diagnosis of endometriosis can also be a result of findings from a transvaginal ultrasound, MRI, or a qualified and experienced medical gynecologist diagnosing based on symptoms and clinical and examination findings. If you are unsure or have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are incredibly grateful for you’re help if you can do our survey 🙏💕🙏
